I am intellectual, genuine, and nocturnal.

My Self-Summary

Hi there! I'm a 23 year old American-born Chinese medical student at the University of Kentucky. I am an otaku and a nerd and am not ashamed of it! I will make totally nerdy comments in normal conversation... like maybe I'll insert a totally random XKCD reference in the middle of a conversation, or maybe relate a discussion on theology to astrophysics, or get into a philosophical discussion about the anime Death Note.

I love to go swing dancing, and at the risk of sounding conceited, I am pretty good at it! (I have over four years of experience!) I would also like to learn to learn to ballroom dance and tango, but it is hard to learn those without a partner to take lessons with.

Being a nerd means that I play video games too, like Okami, Mario Kart, Katamari Damacy, Rockband, Half-Life, Halo, Super Smash Brothers, Chrono Trigger, and yes, even Pokemon.

Music is a huge part of my life; I play the violin and I find it a very important outlet for my emotions. I think there are only a few universal languages, and I was lucky enough to be gifted with the ability to communicate with two of them: math and music. I also used to play with the UK Symphony Orchestra, and have performed at Carnegie Hall and also at an anime convention!

Recently, I started going to anime cons. I found a fantastic group of friends who cosplay and I decided to join in! If you don't know what cosplay is, feel free to ask! Hopefully you won't get weirded out, hehe. I have cosplayed as Issun from Okami, Shinichi Chiaki from Nodame Cantabile, and I am working on a Squall outfit from Final Fantasy VIII for my next con. I have been to three anime cons thus far, and I'm hoping to go to more in the future!

I also make AMVs or Anime Music Videos. That's basically where you take a song or other audio clip you really like and create a music video for it with clips from an anime you like too! I have been to three anime cons thus far, and won both AMV and cosplay awards at each one!

I'm a pretty textbook case of an INFJ personality type. Apparently only 0.5% of guys are INFJs, so I guess I'm a pretty unique person! I find a lot of happiness in making other people happy, and I try to do whatever I can do to help them and make them happy. It's caused me a lot of stress in life; I have a hard time accepting that I can't make everybody happy. I am always willing to help people with their issues, from computer issues to relationship issues. I get the most happiness in my life from helping other people and receiving their trust and respect in return. My biggest fear is to be abandoned by those I care about, so I do all I can to hang on to and care for those who care for me.

And that's pretty much me... part musician, part scientist, totally helpful, totally nerdy, and unabashedly uncool.

What I’m doing with my life

Life? HAHAHAHA. What a joke. I'm a med student, I have no life. Unless you call studying and making immature jokes about odd-sounding anatomical names a life...

I’m really good at

Breaking things. Fixing things. Making nerdy references. Playing RPGs. Cooking. Making sushi. Swing dancing. Karaoke. DDR. Being stereotypically Asian. Listening to people. Sleeping.

The first things people usually notice about me

Perhaps that I'm Asian? If you can tell I'm Chinese at first glance, more props to you. Half the time even I can't tell the difference between Chinese/Japanese/Korean people.

From my actions, you'll probably notice I like to stay out of the center of attention, and I tend to stand off to the side and watch other things go on around me. Not that I'm aloof... I just tend to be non-imposing by default.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Ender's Game, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, anything by Michael Crichton, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia... I read a lot of nonfiction too. I read a lot of technical documentation, but my favourite nonfiction books have been Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks, A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! by Richard Feynman, and The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene.

Movies: Big Fish (and pretty much any Tim Burton film), Hero (英雄), Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Forrest Gump, Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, Spirited Away. I also loved The Matrix. It's so great they didn't ruin that movie by making two crappy sequels, right?

TV: (Even though this isn't a category on there, I still think it's important!) School and real life have been catching up to me recently, so I don't get to rot my mind with TV much anymore. I do love watching South Park still... thank goodness for Tivo! Back when I did watch TV, I used to watch House, M.D., Scrubs, Mythbusters, and Family Guy. I also watch quite a bit of Anime. My favourite one is Nodame Cantabile and my second favourite is Death Note. I've also been known to fanboy over Azumanga Daioh, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop.

Music: I listen to a lot of British pop... Coldplay, Embrace, Keane, Oasis, Robbie Williams, Razorlight, Manic Street Preachers... I listen primarily to Absolute Radio over the Internet to get my fix of British music. I also like The Killers, R.E.M, a random assortment of classic rock tunes from the 70's and 80's like The Eagles, Electric Light Orchestra, Eurythmics, The Police, Guns 'n' Roses, and of course, Rick Astley, Seriously, I don't mind being Rickrolled at all!

I listen and dance to jazz, anything from the classic big band/boogie woogie stuff of Glenn Miller, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, and Jimmie Lunceford to the rockabilly stuff of Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, and Elvis Presley. Surprisingly, some of Christina Aguilera's recent stuff is actually danceable too!

Since I play the violin, I also have a love for classical music. My favourite works are Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Also close to the top on the list are Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, and Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C minor.

Some kinds of music I can only take in moderation: these include country, rap/hip-hop, metal, and any postmodern excuses for classical music. I don't hate them, I just couldn't live with myself if I listened to that stuff all day.

Food: I love to cook and try new kinds of food... I'll try anything at least once! I am pretty good with a grill, and I also make damn good baklava, even though it takes forever to make. I can also make sushi! I have an excellent culinary imagination, so I am always looking to put my own twist on things. One of my acquaintances who is a chef told me I should consider going to culinary school! And I might in the future, just for fun.

The six things I could never do without

  • My computers, all five of them! Pitchblende, Nox, Matrix, Kryptik, and Sapphire.
  • The Internet. "I'm not an addict, I can quit anytime!"
  • Close friends I can completely trust.
  • Music. I think I have music appropriate for every mood I'm in or ever will be in.
  • My Violin.
  • Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase. I'd be ATP-less and miserable without it.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The past... the present... the future... everything, over and over again... to an extent, I tend to think too much. I like to live in the past sometimes.

On a typical Friday night I am

I'm not a big fan of crazy parties and the like, so on Friday night I'll probably be found at home, unwinding and recharging. I might be hanging out with a few friends, but I'm usually just hanging out at home. I might be chatting online or watching a movie or playing video games or working on a computer program I suddenly had the inspiration to write. Or I could be exhausted from the week's work and be passed out on my bed.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I can sing higher notes than some girls I know. Yeah, you know that really high note in Take On Me? I can hit that! I'll even sing along with Belle while watching Beauty and the Beast. I've scared many people with how high my falsetto voice is, so take this as your warning!

Of course, that's the *most* private thing I'll admit publicly. I try to be an open book, so if you want to ask anything more private I won't mind.

You should message me if

If you think otakus/nerds/geeks are cool... If you're sick of the computers in Mario Kart pulling blue shells out of nowhere... If you have ever caused an explosion in a lab... If you check behind you to make sure there are no velociraptors... If you were confused by the ending of Evangelion... If you wonder what kind of cat food Schrodinger's cat eats... If you like combining Diet Coke and Mentos... If you think normal people are boring...

Or if you just have an overwhelming desire to click that button. It's right there. It wants your attention. I mean the button, not me.
