My self-summary
I grew up in the Midwest, came out to LA for undergrad in chemistry, studied abroad in England for a term, and moved out here for grad school. I'm pretty psyched about my research as a grad student (computational chemistry and many-body physics), for which Tulane is well known.

I'm interested in a lot of different things, which keeps my friends guessing.
What I’m doing with my life
Have just finished an Master's at UCSB, and am now at Tulane for a PhD

Trying to walk like an Egyptian
I’m really good at
writing, especially inappropriate limericks (go ahead, try me!)
physics, if I slowed down and gave complete answers more often.
picking up languages
identifying a given James Bond movie from 10 seconds of dialogue across the house
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I just finished up _Fragile Things_ and _Good Omens_, both by Neil Gaiman (who signed the latter when he came to UCSB!)

The book or short story that probably most deeply affected me emotionally was Unamuno's "San Manuel Bueno, Martir" and "River of Fire" by Qurratulain Haider. The authors next on my list are probably Boris Akunin and Arturo Perez-Reverte. I am getting more into Thomas Pynchon and Will Self these days, and have just come off a Victor Pelevin kick. I should probably be watching out for an ice pick.

Movies: the Iron Man movies; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (new and old); most Apatow flicks, Revanche, Taken, Oldboy (about half of it), Endhiran:the robot (a must-see!) Werner Herzog is cool too. TV-wise, probably Louie, Breaking Bad, 30 Rock, Mad Men and Bones.

music: Mastodon, Brand Nubian, the Doves, Immortal Technique, Massive Attack and Thievery Corporation (the last concert I attended), Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ( I have 4 GB of his stuff sitting around, and used to lip sync to it as a kid on road trips), Opeth, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, the Doves, Royksopp, Daft Punk, Ice Cube, Man Man, They Will Destroy You, And You Will Know Us..... , Kvalertak (all at the most recent SxSW), Mogwai, Bubblegum Octopus

food, pretty much anything, (I cook _north_ Indian pretty well, having grown up with it) at the moment having a serious Korean jones phase

At the moment I seem to be stuck in a collecting Soviet kitsch, reading Spanish language writers phase. I guess I should be watching out for an ice pick.
The six things I could never do without
my computer
Candide, by Voltaire
a bicycle, with the knobbliest tires one can get (because on my desert island, I want to be prepared for that freak snowstorm)
young spring lamb, especially with hollaindaise (thanks Julia Child)
shandy/toddy/tinto de verano
The World Sinks Except for Japan
I spend a lot of time thinking about
world domination (Pinky and the Brain style)

trails to ride my mountain bike on

how to better improve my writing

why the random music my brain composes before I go to sleep has no connection to any dreams I have that night
On a typical Friday night I am
contemplating research papers, watching a movie, testing a new recipe out
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I sing "Bananaphone" in the shower. (Edit: "This Kiss" as well. PPS: Bulletproof and Pretty Girl Rock has also been added to the list)

I once had Bill Clinton's cellphone number -- and lost it.
