German- Indian, American-born designer L S studied Architecture and Art at the Rhode Island School of Design, and the ETH-Zurich. He has worked in architecture firms in the US, Switzerland, and Germany, designing the WWII Memorial winning competition entry with Friedrich St.Florian, and working with Rafael Vinoly Architects in New York city. He spent a year as a furniture maker at a studio in Brooklyn, and has been an artist assistant to Dan Walsh, a minimalist painter and printmaker in NYC. After moving to San Francisco, he worked with architecture firm Anshen+Allen, and modelmakers Gemmiti Model Art before starting his own business—Studio for Metropolitan Craft. The Studio’s work uses architectural models to generate tabletop sculpture, furniture, and architecture. He enjoys a rich collaboration with local artists and makers through TechShop SF- a member workshop equipped with sophisticated CNC fabrication equipment. The Studio has many concurrent projects, and tries to annually enter a design competition.
L enjoys making as much as designing, and goes through many iterations and prototypes before finalizing a design product. Current projects include a series of illustrative model blocks for TechShop, the Bay Area model series featured at the SFMOMA ( Sutro Tower, Oakland Cranes, Golden Gate Bridge), a grand piano, a custom ice cube tray, custom speaker cabinets, plywood furniture, and letterblocks.
