My self-summary
*This summary is quite dated, I just re-enabled my account but haven't reviewed or changed anything yet, I've changed, my circumstances have changed, but for now this will have to do as a starting point. :-)

-------

How much do we really communicate through our pictures, our jobs or careers, our even our hairstyle? I'm guilty of thinking I can divine a lot from a picture, a hair style, or a job, yet I know from my own "look", and profession, that nothing could be further from the truth...

The irony is that most of the people that I really admire, the truly amazing and inspiring artists, authors, filmmakers and great minds... the majority of them don't actually look like "artists" or look like the wildly imaginative and creative people that they are... walking down the street I wouldn't have a clue if I saw many of my heroes, and more often than not they actually look fairly normal and nondescript, which gives me hope that if I'm perceived that way perhaps I'm closer to being like my heroes than I think! ;-)

So, call it a mid-life-identity-crisis, but I find it a little shocking and somewhat interesting when people I meet (particularly at work) assume that I fit neatly into some corporate-software-worker-label and personality. It's amusing, little do they know that I once lived in a "hippy" intentional community, or that at one point I was a single father on welfare raising a little girl by myself, or that I used to repair pneumatic tools like those big manly pavement breakers (jackhammers), or that I'm a fairly eclectic musician, or that I'm obsessed with trying foods of the world. Or that although I lOVE movies, independent, alternative, mainstream and foreign that I actually watched two seasons of America's Next top Model with my fairly feminist ex-girlfriend.. (yowza, that one still surprises me!)

Can you say creative dichotomy, and never a dull moment? ;-)

Oh and speaking of dichotomy and contradictions, I'm an ex-vegetarian that still eats a LOT of vegetarian foods, but have been known to eat tofu dogs with real chili, though admittedly I still lean more toward eating vegetarian and more health conscious, but delicious!

I don't try to be different, and I certainly don't try to advertise how adventurous and interestingly peculiar my life has been, but it is who I am, and chances are I'm going to find the most compatibility with someone who also realizes that they are somewhat non-traditional and adventurous in many areas of their lives, but not by prescription, which might allow them to find comfort and enjoyment in some downright pedestrian activities as well.

So, in lieu of having the opportunity and experience of randomly meeting me on the street, in a random environment, and without any of the contrived "dating" pretenses and confusion these sites seems to bring up, I've decided I would also let people try and divine a little of who I am by letting them read not only this profile but my Facebook page too (if you were curious, but not required for sure), to see the 'un-photo-shopped snapshot' of who I "am", and who I was, and the things I think about and care about (in my social world at least), which is actually quite indicative of who I am as I don't edit too much:

Also, if you're so inspired you can also listen to some of my music, and see one of my video montages here: http://www.reverbnation.com/shawnmurphy101

*Admittedly it doesn't reflect much of the acoustic and electric guitar stuff I do, which actualy just might be more of where I'm going in my next phase of music, but this music also says a lot about who I am creatively, hope you like it, but if not I totally understand, this is definitely off the beaten path :-)
What I’m doing with my life
Watching movies and cooking shows with my son, and playing music with my friend Chad. Starting a new job tomorrow (4/31), and I'm also looking forward to my next explosion of creativity, and to meeting someone else who is perhaps an artist of one kind or another, a writer, painter, musician, chef, or just a creative thinker, social explorer, inquisitive and very open minded?
The first things people usually notice about me
I would think my hair and my eyes.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Haruki Murakami - Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Norwegian Wood. Anything by David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs, Gabriel Garcia Marquez - One hundred years of solitude, Thich Nhat Hanh, etc., and many others... I also love to read quite a bit of non-fiction as well.

Music: (a completely random stream of consciousness list): The Starlight Mints, Lady Gaga, The Beatles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Led Zeppelin, Bach, (lots of classical, but don't ask me who the composer is, I'm far from a snob), .. Jazz, Blues, Big Band, Classical, Funk,Bluegrass, Big Band... (and on and on, I mean, what _don't_ I like?)

Food: ETHNIC and everything in-between: Thai, Indian, Ethiopian, Chinese, Japanese, Sushi, Mexican, Italian, Greek... I love cooking and eating delicious and unusual food.

Movies (this could be an extremely long and eclectic list, but here's a sample): Everything from Philadelphia Story- Katherine Hepburn and Carey Grant, (love them), to Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, O' Brother Where Art Thou (love the Cohen Brothers), to things like Impromptu and Pride and Prejudice, The Illusionist, Pirates of the Caribbean, Adaptation, The Science of Sleep, Juno, Fargo, Dot the i, and I'm also slightly addicted to documentaries!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Whatever is right in front of me - I try not to think too much. Although I am extremely curious by nature, intellectualizing in and of itself is overrated... breath in, breath out, chill out. :-)
