introverted, intellectual, and curious
My self-summary Propose an edit
I am an inveterate reader. If I do not have a book in my hands, you can bet it is
tucked in my back pack, or in the bag on my bike, or in the car, or
somewhere about my person. I have a preference for science fiction and
fantasy, but can
also be found reading just about anything, fiction or non-fiction,
I also read the local newspaper (online version, anyway) and at
least one or two world news sources on a daily basis.
One of the few times I do not have a book in my hand is when I'm on
stage, in the dark,
trying not to run over actors. I do tech theatre, with a preference
for backstage work. I have done a few show's with Know Theatre a community theatre
in downtown Binghamton.
As part of the above, I do set construction, which got me into
woodworking as a hobby. I'm not a real accomplished craftsman at
this point, but I enjoy the occasional project.
In addition to these I have a wide variety of minor interests, and
have at various times taken up assorted musical instruments,
needlepoint, golf, archery, and probably several others I've
forgotten at this point.
I am an introvert by nature, with a tendency to try to avoid
unfamiliar social situations. While I have gotten somewhat better
at dealing with people, I may still come across as cold or distant
until I get comfortable with them. This tendency is somewhat
exacerbated by an inability to make small talk. When I do get into
a conversation, I like it to be about something. I enjoy
intelligent conversations (or debates) about politics, or social
issues, or the state of the world, or you name it. I will admit to
a greater interest in discussions on space travel, alternative energy, or
theatre as these are all subjects of particular interest to me.
Please note that I am not neccesarily looking for someone who
agrees with me, but simply someone who understands the difference
between fact and opinion, ans is willing to discuss both.
Politically, I'm not sure where I fit, definitely liberal, but with
some odd twists and turns. My single biggest belief is that the
government should keep its hands off anything relating to how
people choose to live their lives, as long as it does not hurt
anyone else. This includes marriage, sexuality, end-of-life
decisions, literature and television censorship, you name it.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
Working as a mechanical engineer/machine
designer for a company in Binghamton. Also starting to take classes
towards what will hopefully become a masters degree somwhere in the
not to distant future. At present I am also cycling to work, both
for my own health and for environmental reasons, and taking karate
classes for the heck of it.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Reading, obviously, as I've spent a significant portion of my life
doing it. I also like to think that I am a decent engineer,
especially with regards to logical thought and technical design.
Other than those, I couldn't say what I'm particularly good at, but
am willing to try my hand at anything, and with more or less
success.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
I really don't know how to answer this question. As I mentioned
above, I am not at my best in unfamliar social situations, and as
such tend to fade into the background. Thus when I first meet
someone, they probably don't notice me at all. A tendency to get in
long discussions about subjects, trivial or serious, would likely
be the best answer, but this is usually only after I get
comfortable around someone.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
I am a very heavy reader, and my current favorite changes rather
frequently. My favorite authors are probably Robert Heinlein, Lois McMaster
Bujold, David
Weber, Terry Pratchett and more
recently Eric
Flint. I am also quite fond of the work of Sara Pararetsky and
Dana
Stabenow.
b) My favorite movie is probably "Real Genius" a very geeky, but very
funny 80's movie. As may be obvious from above, I am a fan of
literary science fiction, but I tend enjoy SF movies only if
they're of the thoughtful, rather than action oriented, type. This
would include "GATTACA" and "Simone", but leaves out
gems such as "Aliens" or "Total Recall". My personal collection
also includes such wide ranging selections as "Casablanca", "Kissing Jessica
Stein", "Clerks", "Gladiator", "The Princess Bride",
and "The
Scarlet Pimpernel", make of this what you will.
c) My musical tastes cover a fairly wide range. I am fond of some folk, especially folk rock; Celtic and Celtic rock; filk, often described as science fiction folk; eighties; musicals, especially "Chess" and "Les Miserables"; a limited selection of classical; and a very limited selection of country. My recent CD purchases have largely been from either local performers or ones heard on weird radio shows on NPR or college stations.
d) I couldn't say that I have a favorite food or foods. I am a decent cook, although my tendency to experiment means that not all my attemtps are succesful. It also means, however, that I don't have a single style or cuisine that I attempt. When eating out I am likewise reasonably eclectic, but will attempt anything once or twice if I haven't had it before. I have a preference for local restaurants over chains, but that's more of a social choice than a gustatory one.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
Besides the basic neccesities of food, clothing, shelter, etc. I
would tend to say intellectual stimulation. This includes such
sub-categories as books, interesting conversation and/or an
internet connection. Beyond that I'm really not sure.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
A lot of things. I tend to free associate readily, especially when
I'm trying to focus on a boring bit of work, or trying to fall
asleep at the end of the day. In the spirit of this question, which
I guess is asking about favored intellectual pursuits I am a fan of
alternative energy and the environment and space exploration and
exploitation. As such I spend a fair amount of time pondering
these, ways that I can personally help with one or the other, and
what I would do if I had the money/authority/influence to advance
one or the other of these causes.
You should message me if Propose an edit
If you are looking for intelligent conversation and are willing to
discuss just about anything as the mood strikes. If you have been
described as a geek, or describe yourself as one. If you are
looking for someone to be friends with, and see if anything
develops from there. If your idea of a relationship involves mutual
support, but not mutual dependence. And above all else, if you feel
like it.
