I have recently come to the conclusion that I work at the
McDonald's of the Moving-And-Storage industry. Workers are hired on
at as small a wage as possible, for part time only. There's
benefits if you want to pay for them, no Union, no breaks to speak
of. If you want to be paid to be sick or take time off, you have to
be full-time. This means making the big break into Manager or the
psuedo-existant position of assistant manager. However, I've seen
what this has done to my boss, and it isn't worth any amount of
money. Policies and even the layout of our showroom are dictated by
people over two thousand miles away who have only set foot in the
place on brief whirlwind tours of the area. They don't care about
our working environment, or our comfort, or our input. They know
how to do things Better than we ever could. Because this will make
them more money. We are supposed to serve the Customer, but the
suits would rather 'To Serve Man'. Granted, most of our customers
are not the cream of society, or sometimes even mankind. Often
they'd rather walk all over us then be courteous, polite, or
understanding. Like the Suits, they want what they want. And Like
the Suits, they will use us to get it.
Recently, the company took away a peice of equipment from us. It's
a point-of-sale credit card reader for sales at the pump. We
weren't using it to make the 80% of our sales that they require. A
closer look would show that use of the device was near 100%. What
the Suits don't realize is that most of our customers pay cash. So,
we used the handy little widget to print off a slip to be taken
inside to pay with. It was quick and convenient. But the Suits
didn't like the cost. This is another example of a very distant
Company who has no idea what's going on with their People, the ones
who make the money for them.
My job consists of this: working part time for little pay, during
my most productive hours of the day, serving a mediocre product
from a warming tray to an indifferent public, passing the money to
an indifferent employer. Scratch that- the employer is not
indifferent, they want us to make money for them. Is there room in
the workplace for Life or the Soul? It doesn't look that way. They
will fire us for whatever reason they deem necessary, and like
McDonald's, there are countless others willing to step up and take
the small wage for the small job. We are disposable.
I hope to write a sort of part 2 to this, there are things that I'd
like to cover that overlap this, but isn't what I originally
intended to write.
