Rather than include super-long lists, here are my favorite items
from this year:
The Democratic Experience by Daniel J
Boorstein. Wonderful collection of carefully building essays
exposing the cultural history of the US, everything from how the
cash register changed the West to the evolution of mass
Books (fiction): China Mieville
's "Embassytown", a
book about alien linguistics, and what it means for words to
matter. Fantastic world building.
Let's just say everything by Maya Jane Coles
and leave it at
Nature Theater of Oklahoma's Life And Times
, which is kind of
a testament to the spoken word and story and song. Everybody's
story of middle school deserves to be made into a two hour disco
Games: Battlestar Galactica
game of accusing all your friends of being a Cylon, getting them to
believe you, and then betraying them all.
Film: Upstream Color
stunning score cominbed with perfectly deploying all the techniques
of film to try and get across what it's like to lose something
essential to yourself, and not even know what it was.
(awesome crazy brunch),
Tiffin Wallah (awesome cheap South Indian
). I'm vegetarian, but
you don't have to be.
