My self-summary
I'm an engineer - and the job fits me well in many ways. I have always liked taking things apart and figuring out how everything works. This permeates my entire life, as I strive to learn something new at every opportunity. I probably don't fit a lot of engineer stereotypes though - I am not a tech gadget person (no iPhone here), and I couldn't tell you a thing about any episode of Star Trek, but I can probably fix your (fill in the blank) - just give me some time and my tools. Hopefully there will be no extra parts left over when I put it back together! I'm also a musician and have a lot of fun playing in a local tribute band (just as a hobby), but fit very few standard musician stereotypes either. I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs of any form; I'm organized and reliable, and am not broke. :)

Continuing with my deviations from common stereotypes, I don't like beer and could care less about any professional sports team. I do love playing sports though, and play hockey every week and try to climb at the gym whenever I have time and can find an available climbing partner. I also enjoy skiing, biking, running, scuba, martial arts, and a variety of other activities. This past winter (Mar. 2013) I went on a 2+ week trip to Europe skiing 9 days in France, Switzerland, and Italy. We got some AMAZING skiing in - hopefully there will be time next year for a similar trip. I also just got back from Maui (Dec. 2013) where I was working on my windsurfing skills a bit. Finding someone who shares my interest in physical activities/sports/exercise would be ideal, even if we like to do different things.

My place can be a bit messy, but my finances are not. The TV has not been on for years. I try to stay pretty healthy - the dentist is always raving about my teeth, but I could definitely stand to eat less meat and more vegetables. Many have told me that I am a good listener - perhaps I just like solving problems so much that it makes me pay attention more :) I rarely get angry, which makes me good at dealing with problems and working out issues.

I have high expectations of myself and the people I care about. I don't strive to be different for the sake of being different, it just usually turns out that way. I'm attracted to women that are smart and creative and can laugh at themselves and the insanity of the world around us. I want to find someone I will never get tired of talking to for the next 50 years, even after we get tired of doing other things - someone I can learn from and someone who will learn from me. I generally run in the opposite direction when I see lots of makeup, hypocrisy, and entitlement complexes.

Note*** If I wrote you a short message, it is not due to lack of interest. I'm just attempting to leave out all the "your profile sounds great - we have a lot in common - etc". If all that weren't true, I wouldn't have sent any email at all. :)
What I’m doing with my life
- Learning
- Trying to figure out what the next stage of this financial crisis will look like
- Skiing down glaciers in France
- Trying to figure out if I should retire now, change careers, start a business...so many possibilities
- Renovating property
- Browsing okcupid profiles hoping to get lucky and find someone great that I would never have run into otherwise
- Learning to play the drums
I’m really good at
solving problems
listening
skiing
playing the guitar
The first things people usually notice about me
depends on the situation.

In a big group social setting - that I'm quiet.
One on one - my sense of humor.
At work - that I know what I'm talking about and am very direct.

Then again, how am I supposed to know what people first notice about me - not like I make it a habit to ask them after meeting...
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, organic milk, Minute Maid orange juice, South Park, learning, thinking, skiing, YouTube, a good Hitchslap, my guitars, hockey gloves, a short commute, bbq sauce, peanut butter, peaches
The six things I could never do without
taxes
debt
inflation
war
inefficiency

oh wait, that's government...
I spend a lot of time thinking about
everything. I live in my head sometimes...

how long of an email should I write to someone who is really interesting. I don't want to be misinterpreted as having a lack of interest for not writing much, but also don't want to spend a whole lot of time writing something that might never even get a response.

why in their profiles many women instruct men to not write them stupid emails like "Hey, you're hot!". Isn't it convenient that these guys automatically filter themselves out by not being able to figure this out on their own?

whether the sheer abundance of potential people to date (or at least the illusion of it) is helping more people find what they are looking for, or just creating a false need of a mate with a very specific set of traits that are not necessarily correlated to long term happiness.

The best overall solution to improving the federal income tax methodology, and specifically why cost basis for capital gains calculations is not inflation adjusted.

what I should try to write my next song about.
On a typical Friday night I am
hopefully playing a big show somewhere!
Otherwise, working, working out, or out to dinner with a friend.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I can't swallow pills so I just take those chewable baby aspirin if I have a headache.

Things I DON'T care about:
1. Your height. I'm 5'6". If you are shorter or taller, it makes no difference to me.
http://shine.yahoo.com/love-sex/why-shorter-men-taller-women-214600315.html
2. The size of your boobs. Seriously, all the cleavage photos really aren't necessary.
3. Who contacts who first. Someone recently told me she has heard guys look down on women who contact them first as needy, desperate, etc. Thats's B.S. I appreciate it when someone interesting contacts me before I happen to find them.

Things i DO care about:
1. Your brain.
2. Your desire to have kids at some point.
3. Your fitness/activity level.

So, considering that -

Message me if...I message you! Or you just can't resist...

If you want to go climbing at PG Sunnyvale.

If you want to go running around Campbell.

Or if any of the following apply -

...you would be comfortable showing up to our first date with no makeup on

...you have figured out what's really important for a successful long term relationship

...when you workout you do squats

...you like to run, bike, climb, ski, etc.

...you are a good singer or play a musical instrument

...you don't explicitly claim to be attractive or intelligent (the first is a matter of opinion, and the second will be evident from the written content of the profile). Also, humility is both attractive and a sign of intelligence.

...you are looking for an equal
