My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hello. Outwardly I am defined by my career as a professor with an international focus, and the emphasis on my kids (16 & 18). As a result, I have lived and traveled in multiple countries, and also spend a lot of time at kids' sporting events. On the more personal side, I run, hike, bike, cook, read, participate (eg in liberal political events), watch (movies & plays, but hardly any TV), listen (to you and NPR), fix/build/paint/tile (and usually it turns out ok), and value growth & happiness. I'm relatively introspective, and value deep and personal conversations, but try not to take life too seriously. ☺
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
This week included spending one evening with my son who is a Pitt student, another making dinner and watching TED talks with my younger son (high school) and his friend, canvassing for Obama, a couple of runs in Frick and Schenley parks, and now I'm getting ready for my trip to South America where I'll be interviewing politicians and teaching a 3-day course.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Aside from my (receding) red hair, I presume that my descriptors would include calm and competent, fit, and interested in people, politics and the world.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Most importantly, I enjoy reading together. What a great way to spur conversations! My favorite book, therefore, might be what you are reading (at least while I am reading it & we are discussing it).
When I choose reading material, it is usually non-fiction or fictional history. Therefore I like the NY Times, and books I've recently read include Overthrow (about all the countries the US where the US has worked to overthrow the government), Wild, Vargas Llosa's War of the End of the World (a fictional history about a war in Brazil; his Feast of the Goat is also great),
Other authors I enjoy are R. Putnam, Gretchen Rubin, Tom Friedman, David McCullough, Barbara Kingsolver, P. Beinart, other non-fiction & fictional history.
