I am curious, generous, and neurotic.

My Self-Summary

I'm an overly ambitious, somewhat introverted bookworm who likes planning her adventures in advance.

I'm obsessed with questions of trauma, memory and forgiveness as they pertain to nations and to people, which is, as a dear friend of mine says, an excellent example of yoking your critical issues to your vital issues.

I also like counterfactual history, American craft beer, museums, Craftsman furniture, writing personal essays, and peripheries of all kinds.

Now in Turkish
Merhaba!

Simdi Türkçe ökuyorum. Türkçe zor, ama bu dili çok ilginç buluyorum. Gelecek yil Türkçe daha okuyacagim.

Kolay gelsin!

What I’m doing with my life

I just finished a degree in German Studies and History and am now in Berlin. It's pretty neat. I'm supposed to be studying how we create national identity through our history curriculums, and what that means for a German nation-state suddenly besieged by outsiders. (Incidentally, I don't really like the nation-state.)

So far, though, it's been more of the theater and reading books in cafes and wandering around the U-Bahn, and wondering how I got so lucky, and wishing I were better at making friends to share it with.

I’m really good at

Reading and distilling dense historiography quickly (but not remembering facts, not at all), writing under pressure, talking frankly about sex, making bad jokes and laughing before I get to the punchline, finding my way around foreign places, making out, pairing beers and foods, did I mention reading and writing quickly?

I'd like to get better at brewing beer, I'm learning Turkish on top of my Spanish, German, and smattering of Esperanto (with Polish and Hungarian as far-off goals), and I'm always up for learning a new board game, and have found that I am less hopeless at Scrabble than previously assumed.

The first things people usually notice about me

The last person I dated called me "the queen of awkward laughter." So there's that.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I can't make a book list without feeling that it's (1) incomplete and (2) trying too desperately to be cool, but Alice in Wonderland, Ingeborg Bachmann, and Jorge Luis Borges are the first three things I saw on my shelf. I have a strong love-hate relationship with Jonathan Franzen and like graphic novels, too.

(To be honest I read mostly non-fiction these days, but those titles would probably bore you.)

I like movies a lot but never remember them. I do like Werner Herzog a lot, MST3K is a recent favorite, and I came late but happily to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I also have a distressingly deep knowledge of reality television.

Top five musicians are probably R.E.M., Pavement, The Mountain Goats, Indigo Girls and Guided by Voices.

Trying new foods is one of my favorite things in the world--Indian is probably my favorite cuisine? I am also passionate about ice cream. And beer. Don't forget beer.

And these questions never ask about the visual arts, but I'm something of a modern art nerd, so: Die Brücke, particularly Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Paul Klee. Anselm Kiefer. Jenny Holzer. Agnes Martin. Robert Smithson. The wild world of outsider art.

The six things I could never do without

My library card.

My (gallows) sense of humor.

The Internet.

The narrative imagination.

Good beer.

Feminism and its children.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How to write a better feminist sex advice column.

My morbid fascination with Henry Darger.

How to bridge the gap between public history and academic history.

Plans for future road trips and other sorts of trips too.

The cultural turn in history.

On a typical Friday night I am

This past Friday night I went grocery shopping with my roommate, and then we made crepes with Nudossi, the better version of Nutella.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm a pretty open person, but there has to be recipricocity. Feel free to message me and try to figure out what makes me tick, and I'll do the same for you. Deal.

You should message me if

I suppose if you want to be my friend here in Berlin, or if you, too, like some combination of sex toys, craft beer, and Vergangenheitsbewältigung.

I don't know that I'm looking for a full-blown relationship right now, but I'm open to platonic friends, and open whatever else might catch my eye.
