I am If we had some ham, we could have ham, and eggs if we had eggs..

My Self-Summary

I'm really in between my old town (Tucson) and Chicago through August. I'll be going back and forth finishing up some obligations in Tucson and getting ready for my new gig in Chicago.

I'm socially-capable and have a good music collection.

I read heavily, consume music, make little doodads, brew beer, and play card games . At one point, I was serious about being a musician and an audio engineer. Now I do both just for fun/self-fulfillment. Most of my goals and activities revolve around making or learning something. I love any game that involves game theory (ie, poker and rummy), trivia, or language. I enjoy anything that affords a chance for (fairly) good-natured competition.

I enjoy learning about and discussing the standard geek topics: (science and technology), philosophy, and, despite being a card-carrying atheist, theology of any sort. Overly "faith-based" things tend to make me twitchy. For example: when I found out the dinosaurs from Pee-wee's Big adventure (they're on I-10 between Phoenix and LA) had been turned into a creationist giftshop, I barely made it out of the place before either collapsing in a heap or punching out the nearest fundamentalist. If you want to see a man do a great impersonation of Scanners, walk up to me and say something like, "Evolution is only a theory" (I think it's the lack of understanding of what a theory is that really gets me). From the above, I guess I also enjoy overuse of the parenthetical comment.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm moving to Chicago to found a start up. So, I'll be fairly busy in the near-term, but I'm looking for things to do outside of work. Hopefully, this will keep me from becoming one of those people who says "incentivize" or other such fake words. Because that would make me very sad.

Before that, I was a computer geek and program manager for a university. I did IT contracting for a local design firm and museum of contemporary art on the side. I also co-taught a class on technology in academia.

Besides the above, I've started cooking again and brewing beer. Have any suggestions?

I’m really good at

Being Ringo Starr. Seriously, one of the most fun bands I've ever been in was a Beatles cover band. The songs are all great, everybody knows all the songs, and you get paid way better than normal. I actually had to set time aside after shows for signing autographs. As Ringo Starr. As I said, tons of fun.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(A) All those history texts you find in Bookman's. As far as authors go, I won't list everybody but I love Dostoevsky and Mailer, but can't stand Updike or Hesse, if that's any kind of clue as to my tastes.

Outside of generic "Literature" and academic history work, the genre ghettos I most often find my self in are: journalistic work like Dispatches and The Armies of the Night, "higher brow" science fiction like Vonnegut and Niven, and theology (any religion). Of a well known fictional series, I liked the Silmarillion the best, because fake languages, and especially fake histories written to back up fake languages, are the best. And yes, I did type the title by memory.

(B) I like all those mopey movies. You know, they usually have Bill Murray in them. Oh, and Ghostbusters. Which isn't very mopey, but does have Bill Murray in it. This does not void my right to enjoy movies with large explosions.

(C) Aislers Set, Alkaline Trio, Apples in Stereo, Aqua Bats, The Beatles, Beck, Belle & Sebastian, Bjork, Blackalicious, Black Heart Procession, Blonde Redhead, David Bowie, The Cardigans, Cat Power, The Coup, David Dondero, Dirt Bike Annie, Dirty Three, David Bowie, Eels, Elliott Smith, ELO, Elvis Costello, The Faint, The Flaming Lips, The Gap Band, Grandaddy, John Lennon, The Kinks, Ladytron, Mates of State, Mo-dettes, Mr. Lif Mum, Now It's Overhead, Oingo Boingo, Old Dirty Bastard, Palace Brothers, Parliament, Pavement, Peaches, Pedro the Lion, Pinback, The Pixies, Pizzicato Five, Public Enemy, Queen, The Ramones, The Rondelles, Sean Lennon, The Shins, Shonen Knife, Sleater-Kinney, The Slits, The Sounds, Suzanne Vega, Le Tigre, Yo La Tengo

(D) I'm a big fan of eating food made out of things that used to live in the water, from fish sticks to sushi.

The six things I could never do without

Chapstick

Reading material

A bathtub (though if we're talking some post-apocalyptic deal, a lake would do)

Clothes (I prefer to be clothed in most situations)

Shoes (and I've got wussy feet)

Chapstick

I don't know why people seem to dislike this question so much. I think it's great; it lets me tell you that I have decent hygiene while also letting you know that I'll cut you if you try to steal my chapstick.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

History, poker, music, Non-religious ethics. I'm sure there's a decent amount of thought on food and sex in there as well.

On a typical Friday night I am

Don't have any standing activities on Fridays. I do, however, have Bad Movie Night every Sunday.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I have a non-ironic, though perhaps nostalgic, love of "He Went to Paris" by Jimmy Buffett. Seriously.

You should message me if

You found something misspelled or a grammar mistake. Seriously, help me get that shit fixed. It's like telling someone they have something on their face: you feel like an ass for telling them, but you don't want them walking around like that.
