I am balancing, coolness, and nerdiness.

My Self-Summary

I suppose this is where I'm supposed to say I'm a really nice guy and not some weirdo. I'm kind of skeptical and hesitant about doing this so we'll see how it goes (if I come off a little snarky take it with a grain of salt). I like reading fiction, playing guitar in bands, classic movies (go to Film Forum a lot), running, going to museum exhibits, and being around people who are more interested in what's going on in the world than what's going on in their own lives (i.e. if you're the type that twitters what you ate for lunch we might not hit it off so well). Like most folks, having drinks/dinner with friends is near the top of my list of stuff I like to do. I'm mostly an introvert but have moments of charm and ebullience when the situation calls for it (I suppose I've been described as "one of those neurotic New Yorker types" more than once). I guess I'm also that rare nerd who can beat the crap out of most jocks (not that I'm into that sort of thing). Sometimes my sarcasm gets me in hot water; it's usually self-directed though. I've lived in NY my entire life and, fate notwithstanding, hope to stay here. That's about all there is about me.

What I’m doing with my life

Oh God what a wonderful question. Most of the time I'm staving off boredom, avoiding awkward and humiliating situations, and trying to circumvent the soul-crushing aspects of life. Seeking out interesting experiences wherever I can find them - that's pretty much where it's at for me. Much of my life so far has been spent playing guitar in and out of bands. Job-wise, I work in TV commercial production. I guess I spend a lot of time reading fiction and wandering through bookstores too.

I’m really good at

Playing the guitar, pretending I know a lot about stuff (politics, books, middle-brow culture), worrying, empathizing, wandering the streets aimlessly, witty repartee (don't quote me on that), people-watching/eavesdropping, letting you have the final word, games that don't require strategy or skill, telling big shots where they can stick it.

The first things people usually notice about me

I really have no idea. Whatever it is people keep it to themselves. When I wear my glasses I get Clark Kent a lot.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books/Writers: Philip Roth, John Cheever, Bernard Malamud, Richard Yates, John Updike, Frederick Exley, Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff, Richard Price, Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Graham Greene, Nathanael West, Ernest Hemingway, etc.

Music: Elvis, Muddy Waters, Hank Williams, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Sun Records, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, The Rolling Stones, James Brown, Roy Orbison, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Motown, Stax/Volt, The Stooges, Curtis Mayfield, The Boss, The Ramones, Prince... you get the idea.

Movies: I'm a mostly a fan of Hollywood's Golden Age (screwball comedies, film noir, westerns) and European art house films from the '50s and '60s (Renoir, Bunuel, Truffaut). Anything recent? The Squid and the Whale was pretty good.

TV: The Simpsons, The Honeymooners, Get Smart, Mad Men, Daily Show/Colbert Report.

I'll eat just about anything as long as there's no celery involved.

FYI I'm not 60 years old, I'm just a Baby Boomer stuck in a Gen Xer's body. Not sure if that's a clinical condition.

The six things I could never do without

coffee, The New Yorker, a guitar, running, NPR, beer.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

girls, food, and death. Any guy who says otherwise (i.e. Postmodern architecture, green energy solutions) is probably full of it.

On a typical Friday night I am

Friday night is for amateurs. I'm usually home watching PBS or a movie and avoiding all the obnoxious people that come into my neighborhood. I prefer to go out during the week when it's a little less crazy.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I slept with a night-light until I was 16 years old.
