I am honest, analytical, and tidal.

My Self-Summary

I am a nerd.

Even though I know that I am a nerd, you might doubt me, so I offer you the following evidence. I wear glasses that'd be as thick as coke bottle bottoms if it weren't for the wonders of modern optics. I rarely go anywhere without at least one electronic gadget, preferably my laptop or my iPhone. I actually enjoy higher mathematics. I program computers for a living. I play roleplaying games. I play on MUSHes. In fact, my involvement with MUSHes goes far beyond just playing: I co-authored a MUSH client, and I'm also writing a text-based virtual user environment. I wear black socks with white shoes and black shoes with shorts. I am okay with people, but sometimes I can be a real dork. I cannot help but end this paragraph with Q.E.D.

Like many nerds I know, my politics are libertarian-leaning. My philosophy has been heavily influenced by Objectivism, although I no longer adhere to all the dogma that goes with that label. I do like to think about anarcho-capatilist societies, but I have a problem with the idea of dramatically changing society over night.

I am not religious, although I do respect those who are. I have never been able to reconcile religious doctrines with the logic I use to reason about the world. My lack of religion doesn't bother me. I do not believe that we need a higher power to provide us with morality. I think we can typically discern right from wrong on our own.

I tend to avoid talking about philosophy and religion. When I was an Objectivist, I took on many of the undesirable traits that come along with that moniker. I would pick debates with people to win them, not to pursue the truth. I wouldn't listen to reason. I had to be right at all costs. I don't like who I was then. I do enjoy talking about those topics, but sometimes need help to stay focused on pursuing truth, not victory.

I was married in 2000. I love my wife (all the way to the sky). If you do the math, you'll see that we got married very young, and have been married for a while. I consider myself one of the luckiest people on this planet for having found her so early in life. We have an open marriage, and she has a boyfriend. I don't go looking for other partners because I don't want a partner just for the sake of having one. I want to have partners that are friends first, and lovers second.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm embarking on a new phase in my life.

I just recently graduated from University of Nebraska at Omaha, where I was a very non-traditional student. I have my shiny Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics.

Now that I'm not tied down to the school, I have moved out to San Francisco. My employer brought me out here, but I love the city, so I'm happy to be here. Regrettably, circumstances don't allow my lovely wife to move out here with me, but we're going to make it work (and she will move eventually).

This move is an opportunity for me to reboot some of my lifestyle habits. I am going to eat in, eat healthier, and exercise more.

I’m really good at

Programming; mathematics; problem-solving; public speaking; writing; listening; learning; developing characters; storytelling; putting problems into perspective; thinking about things from different points of view; being stubborn.

The first things people usually notice about me

In person, visually oriented people typically notice my size. I'm 6ft and 275lbs. Auditory people would first notice my voice: it is loud, deep, and frequently in use.

I'm not sure what people notice about me online. Most of my online friends have known me for a long time, so none of them remember. However, my survey of a few recent friends indicates that my intelligence and humor are quite noticeable.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) Books: I read a lot of non-fiction, mostly computer and math texts. I also enjoy novels. Right now I'm working my way through Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

(b) I like movies. I see a lot of movies, and I tend to like them. I see many films in the theater.

(c) Some selected artists: Ben Folds; B.B. King; Eric Clapton solo, with Cream, and with Derek and the Dominos; Barenaked Ladies; Moxy Früvous; Moody Blues; Big Bad Voodoo Daddy; Indigo Swing; Ray Charles; Carlos Santana; Aerosmith; Cherry Poppin' Daddies; Cake; Sublime; ZZ Top; Johnny Cash.

In general, I like skilled music, whatever genre it might be.

(d) Beverages: Beer, specifically Guinness; coffee; assorted juices; Diet Pepsi; root beer; cream soda; a wide variety of mixed drinks.

Food: Sushi; indian food; chinese food; mexican food; steak; more steak; just about anything off the grill.

Dessert: Dark chocolate; mint and chocolate ice cream; cheesecake; coffee cake; banana bread; zuccini bread; fruity ice cream.

Cheese. Cheese makes everything better.

The six things I could never do without

Putting aside the basics such as air, water, and food, the things that are essential to my happiness are: my sweeties, my animals, my computers, the internet, my stories, and my brain.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

A glimpse: People; Programming; Math; Sex; Food; Stories; Roleplaying.

On a typical Friday night I am

Probably sitting at home, reading, coding, or hanging out on the internet.
