I am musical, abstract, and introverted.

My Self-Summary

Well I think this will take some thought before I manage to hammer out anything remotely satisfying, which dodges all the pitfalls of these self-summaries, ie not a complete cliche but not try-hard zany, not coming off like a pompous egomonster but not rife with offputting self-deprecation.

In the meantime... in a decision I already fear I will soon regret, I chose the same username as I have everywhere else on the internet, so honestly, if there's anything you want to know about me, a few minutes with google will probably fill you in. In fact, should you be stalkingly inclined, I expect it would be terrifyingly easy to determine exactly where I work, follow me home, and take zoom lens photos of me getting out the shower - were it not for the fact my bathroom has no windows.

What I’m doing with my life

I guess the one sentence summary is that I work as a web developer for an international development charity and devote the vast majority of my attentions otherwise to music, be that writing, playing, producing, exploring, buying, listening and/or dancing to it.

I’m really good at

"Failing to get to work on time" and "mysteriously repelling women" seem to be my strongest attributes, although I'm not sure that response is entirely in the spirit of the question.

I think I'm quite good with words - I seem to have a natural ability to choose tasty morsels of vocabulary, spell them immaculately, string them together eloquently and type them very very very quickly. Having said that, I suppose it is inevitable I have made horrible spelling errors elsewhere on this page; but hey, if I have, at least it'll prompt the point-scoring grammar nazi contingent to message me.

Speaking of such subjects, btw, I'm not a complete snob/pedant - notice that little "btw" I happily snuck in there? - at least not when it comes to the internet, especially IMs and the like. I'll LOL with the best of 'em. However, if I come across a profile that says "I like goin out wiv my m8s", I will close it and move on. With is only a four letter word for heavens sake, and feral illiteracy is not an attractive trait...

Musically I'm not much of a virtuoso on any of my instruments (piano, sax, clarinet), to put it mildly, nor the most sophisticated composer, but I think I have a pretty sharp knack for quality control and deft arrangements.

The first things people usually notice about me

Ask them!

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: mostly sci-fi: from older stuff like Asimov, PKD, to all the newer Stephenson / Stross / PFH / Morgan / Reynolds lark. Also love DNA and Pratchett. I do really like 'normal' books too, but I don't read as much as I wish I did in this dept, mostly cos I don't get many trusted tips and don't gamble on random unknown names the way I do with music, so I devour everything by the few people I discover and like (eg Murakami <3, Banks) and then rather get stuck and go back to the safety of space opera nonsense.

Movies: not really a preferred artform for me, I see very few. Rather predictably, given the above, favourites include sci fi (eg Aliens) and music related (eg Commitments, Blues Brothers). Also like knowingly or unknowingly funny/stupid/cheesy action vehicles (Statham is dominating this arena atm), comedies like Anchorman etc. About my only 'credible' movie taste is probably Coen Brothers' stuff. Oh, and Gondry.

Food: also very much not a foodie. Frankly, if they invent little pills that obviate the need for eating altogether, I'll be first in the queue. Quite unadventurous/fussy, english/italian/indian is my standard fare.

Music: I'm yet to discover a genre without some artists/tunes I like, and my all-time favourites are from an apparently random scattering of genres from soul to ambient to rock to jungle to folk to techno to world... On a fundamental level, I honestly don't understand people who say "I like metal" or even "I like everything except metal", my musical appreciation circuits are really not wired along genre lines, it seems very silly to me. Then again I guess foodies would have a similar struggle grasping my narrow taste in cuisine.

Anyway, point being, any attempt to list my favourite artists ends up several hundred pages long and still fails to give you a managable handle on what I like. So instead I direct you to http://www.last.fm/user/stevekeiretsu where if you really want to you can minutely analyse and graph (nearly) every single tune I've listened to in the last three years. Exciting prospect I'm sure.

The six things I could never do without

music
sleep
caffeine
internet
can't think of much else?? I am fairly minimal in my lifestyle/requirements, to be honest.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Crikey, everything, far too much. I really envy people who can breeze around and do stuff without overanalysing it massively both beforehand and retrospectively.

If I say "music" yet again here, you'll mark me down as tediously obsessional, right?

On a typical Friday night I am

Pubbing and/or clubbing.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Er...

You should message me if

Any reason. I'm very happy to be the recipient of flirts, propositions, platonic chit chat, jokes, poems, short stories, whatever... and I have this whole shyness thing going on so frankly it's best you message me if you are even slightly inclined. If you wait for me to message you... well, hell will likely freeze over while I'm still overanalysing how to strike the perfect tone.
