My self-summary Propose an edit

I've noticed that there are a few lines that tend to pop up in lots of people's profiles. Like this one:

"Shy and awkward at first, but chatty and friendly once you get to know me."

and this one:

"Love to go out on the town, but just as happy to curl up at home with a movie."

Both of those apply to me. No surprise there. I'm an INTP if that means anything to you, but I've found that as I mature I'm a little less heavy on the "T(hinking)" (not that I'm getting dumber!) and have better coping skills when it comes to the "I(ntroverted)" part.

I like to think of myself as artsy. I love to write, I've experimented with painting, and I spent most of my childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood in subservience to the Royal Conservatory of Music (finally passed all those piano exams). I'm a huge opera buff and go as often as I can (I even went to the Ring Cycle this year and loved every minute of it). I sing soprano.

I have a definite dorky side. I'm a computer programmer and have a soft spot for Monty Python, long involved computer games with really complicated rules and melodramatic plotlines, and math. I've played ADOM for years and years but have yet to win the stupid thing. My intellectual interests include economics, literature, philosophy, and feminism.

What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit

Mostly I've been moving around, a lot. Since 2005 I've moved from Edmonton to Toronto to Edmonton to Toronto to New York City to New Jersey to somewhere else in New Jersey to New York to Toronto. That's eight moves in three years. I've lost track of half my belongings, and I'm exhausted.

After nine months in NYC (and environs) I'm back in Toronto, working as a computer programmer.

My educational background is fairly diverse - I spent three years as a business student, but after three years I hated it so much that I transferred into computer science with only a year left to go on my business degree. The whole time I picked up as many liberal arts classes as my respective programs would let me.

Stating the obvious, drawing, procrastinating, raising my eyebrows.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit

I have no idea. Sometimes people think I'm Italian but actually I'm a WASP.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit

Ok, here we go...

Books/Authors: Godel, Escher, Bach, Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando, Great Expectations, Anna Karenina, Delta of Venus, Possession, Margaret Atwood, Susie Bright, Kurt Vonnegaut. Recently I've been enjoying The Prince of Nothing series by R. Scott Baaker. The latest book I read was The Crying of Lot 49.

Movies: I'm into old classics and silent movies, as well as basically anything a little offbeat. My favorites are Double Indemmnity, All About Eve, Singin' in the Rain, and Napoleon (1927). For more recent movies, I liked Me and You and Everyone We Know, Mulholland Drive, Adaptation, and The Queen. I could watch Masterpiece Theatre all day.

Music: My first (and truest) love is classical music and opera, especially anything French or Russian. I've had people who otherwise love classical music tell me that Mozart is "boring", and my reaction is usually to sputter in disbelief. Right now I'm listening to Bluebeard's Castle over and over and seeing the Ring Cycle has sold me on Wagner, but I love all the Italian favorites too.

Non-classical, I'm into jazz (though not much of an expert) and musicals. I also like some indie bands, like The Decemberists and Feist. I love Canadian bands The Bicycles and The Acorn. By no stretch of the imagination am I indie-cool.

The six things I could never do without Propose an edit

My left thumb. My right thumb. My computer. My telephone (though I hate cell phones). Something to read and/or listen to. A writing implement.

You should message me if Propose an edit

You think we have things in common and that we'd make good friends. I ask only that you be smart and sane. I am especially interested in hearing from women. I'm sorry to say that if you're a guy, chances are pretty good that I won't respond. I have a lot of wonderful men in my life already.

The first thing you should know is that I'm happily partnered. This means dating is off the table. And yes, I know this is the last thing in my profile. If you read down this far, I'm flattered.
