I am pedantic, pragmatic, and zany.
My Self-Summary
I've been
vegetarian for 10 years now, but I'm
not annoying about it though I won't let people keep meat in my
fridge or cook it for them. Despite this (depending on your
preferences), I am an excellent cook.
I like
science a
lot, and it contributes to a lot of my personal philosophy.
Sometimes I don't want to talk to people because I'm worried that
they will be flaky and I will have to hurt their feelings if we get
past small talk. I'm getting past that, but it may be because most
of the people I've met in Vancouver have a pretty good head on
their shoulders.
I'm more of an extrovert than I used to believe I was, though I
still don't enjoy crowds or really loud people.
While I do a pretty good sarcastic deadpan shtick, I am usually
pretty honest and candid once I am comfortable with someone.
I don't drive, and don't like the effects cars have on urban
atmospheres. Aesthetic atmospheres, not just chemical ones. I'm
thinking in terms of the noise they create, the aggression they
frequently stir in drivers, and the constant threat of instant
death as a pedestrian or cyclist.
I have no interest in witnessing the further perpetuation of the
human species. You'll note the previous phrase is far less damning
than your initial reading of it probably suggested.
See, I told you I was pedantic.
What I’m doing with my life
Yet another degree, this time in computer science. I'm finding
programming fairly fun, though I'm feeling quite done with school.
Ten (nearly) straight years should really be enough.
I ride about 5000 km on my bike(s) nearly every year between
commuting and occasional ridiculously long rides. These days I
pretty much only have time to ride to school, but I still get a few
weekend rides in.
I have a habit of picking up weird fitness interests from time to
time. No spare time right now, but here are some things I've done
recently: distance running, aerial dance, gymnastics. Bodyweight
exercises are always fun. Things I would like to do eventually:
BJJ, 'professional' wrestling (the goofy, acrobatic, showy style),
a strong(wo)man competition (primarily for the tire flipping), and
a hell of a lot more bike touring and
randonneuring.
I also enjoy making time to hang out with good friends, one-on-one
situations preferred. I'm fine in groups if I know everyone or if
they're all on my wavelength, but they're generally not my thing.
I’m really good at
Making things from scratch, sticking with daunting tasks, coming up
with totally random things.
The first things people usually notice about me
My big blue eyes, that I'm RIGHT BEHIND THEM (I tend to walk
quickly, and I suppose quietly). Probably not much else these days.
I'm blending in better than I used to.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
A) My favourite books to read lately are popular summaries of
psychological research (Seeing Voices, Blink, Stumbling on
Happiness, Games People Play recently), and historical romances for
fun. I have a book on decision theory (Choices) that I keep meaning
to get through too.
B)
Phantom of the Paradise
, hands down. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to enjoy
movies, though.
C) I miss the days of Brave New Waves. If you know of some similar
radio program, please let me know. I typically only like a small
sub-set of any genre, but much of it falls in jazz (moreso the
"free jazz" that no one seems to like), ambient, jungle, hardcore
gabber, funk, hip hop if the lyrics are clever, and a bunch of
awful 80s crap (Billy Idol, Duran Duran, Micheal Jackson, Pet Shop
Boys). I have pretty bad taste in music, actually. I am comfortable
with this.
D) It would be very mean to make me answer this, and I really like
a lot of different foods, so long as they're vegetarian. I get
quite excited about the thought of huge amounts of spinach and gui
lan, and noodles can hardly ever do wrong.
The six things I could never do without
1) some free time, 2) good food, 3) regular exercise 4) good sex,
5) a comfy bed, 6) someone to listen to my inane prattle
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Bikes. Why the hell they did that. How to make some pizza/cookie
hybrid that actually tastes good. Where I haven't been yet, and
what is the best way to get there. Things that I would make if I
had time. How other people think about things. If a city populated
entirely by exact copies of myself would be more awesome or
annoying. How that thing got in there. Dinner!
On a typical Friday night I am
I enjoy the ritual of a Friday night beer. The Germans have a
superstition about toasting before they start drinking. Failure to
do so results in seven years of lousy sex. I've been toasting for
for the four years since I heard that, but I never did habitually
before. I'm very excited to see if I've been having lousy sex all
this time!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I actually do like it.
You should message me if
You know of some place or thing in the lower mainland that I should
be aware of. You're fun and interesting in the odd way that I find
people fun and interesting (read: a little weird, a healthy sense
of adventure and curiosity, and you're into getting stuff done).
You have lots to talk about other than video games, movies,
television, sports, cars, and cell phones. Power tools are an
acceptable topic of conversation.
