My self-summary
I love science. I love art. For a while I was a nuclear physicist at Los Alamos, but needed to be more creative and messy. Now an architect, I am passionate about creating beautiful spaces, and get great enjoyment from doing sketches and psychoanalysis to help clients visualize and realize meaningful places to live.
What I’m doing with my life
I have run great rivers in the American West; enjoyed trips to Burgundy, the Dordogne, Andalucia and Liguria; written short stories; painted oils, acrylics and watercolors; and raised a marvelous son.
This afternoon I spent an inordinate amout of time smelling eleagnus and abelia-- I'm very impressed by the things that decide to bloom in the fall. Might be a lesson there....
I’m really good at
Ellipses....
Brevity? Not so much....
The first things people usually notice about me

My impeccable table manners....
I speak Cebuano very poorly (what is Cebuanese for 'not at all?')....
My fondness for redundancy and ellipses....
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I have seen nothing more beautiful than L’abbaye de Fontenay and heard nothing more profound than Tallis’s Spem in Alium. Currently I enjoy listening to music from Mali (Ali Farka Toure’, Habib Koite’), the Mississippi delta (John Hurt), Celtic traditions (Kate Rusby), Mexican bars (Lila Downs), and contemporary America (Wilco).
Love reading the New Yorker (David Sedaris, Jill Lepore, Malcolm Gladwell, Junot Diaz), anything by Samuel Beckett, the advice column by Emily Yoffe on Slate.
Live theater at Woolly Mammoth, Everyman, Center Stage.
Movies: Cave of Forgotten Dreams (actually any film by Werner Herzog), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Motorcycle Diaries, the films of Tarkovsky.
Food: Tapas! Any of Jose Andres' restaurants. Woodberry Kitchen. Fresh, local ingredients.
The six things I could never do without
I do have a fondness for oxygen and water, and there's certainly a lot to be said for many of the elements in the periodic table. But only six? First are my son, my sister and brother (are they really things?). My favorite possession throughout the years has been my bicycle. The quality of life would be much diminished without NPR... no one else speaks French quite like Eleanor Beardsley.
Could I be blind, deaf or unable to smell or feel, and still do, still be? Hmmmm. Time to bring out the ellipsis....
I spend a lot of time thinking about
introducing a motif other than ....
What is up with dark energy and dark matter, anyway?
Is my self-awareness only a temporary delusion, something that ceases to be when I do, kind of like a Norwegian Blue Parrot?
Did I remember to put more water in the dog's bowl?
On a typical Friday night I am
wondering what I will do for exercise tomorrow- biking/kayaking/running/hiking, and which play/museum/farmers' market/friend will I visit this weekend?
