My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Middle-aged gay male living the life (well, in part) on the West Coast after early life in that heartland that we call the Midwest. I like travel, sunsets, down-to-earth people... blah, blah – but hey, I really do like traveling to the Sierra Nevada in the warm months when you can hike, backpack, and take pictures without worrying about dressing for frostbite if you stay out for an hour too long. Back in SF, I stay pretty active with tennis, biking, running, cultural events, playing pool, singing, and sitting and reading in a coffee shop (yes, I consider reading an activity!). I especially enjoy good, in-depth conversations with close friends and partners. That's become too often marginalized in our modern, online society.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Well, I'm at a pretty good point in my career and living at a great location in San Fran – how could one complain? – but am missing that one vital ingredient, which is a very significant other man to spend time and perhaps life with. I really enjoy travel, but noticed in my last overseas trip that there was a distinct melancholy when I was traveling alone. After moving out here from the Midwest and taking a detour via a brief episode into another career, I came back to what I was doing before (environmental chemistry & consulting), realizing that's where I should have been all along. I'm happy here with some great friends in my life, and was until recently active in a community singing group (that's where the tenor in my username comes from) as well as tennis, backpacking, biking, reading, playing pool, and exploring, among other things. How about you?
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Ping pong! Too bad nobody plays this wonderful game – San Francisco is too crowded to have space for tables! Not too bad at pool either.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I'm somewhat reserved, but friendly and open to new people and new experiences. I'm interested in substance more than image, am a good conversationalist, and like in-depth conversation rather than gossip. Somewhat analytical in outlook based on my background in the sciences. Anyone else out there who's just a little like this?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

This has to be an abbreviated list, obviously. Fave books include Independent People, A Life in Full, Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, Cadillac Desert, The Control of Nature, the Dune trilogy, The Long Walk, Howards End, among others.

Movies or TV novellas include The Usual Suspects, The Magnificent Ambersons, Inside Man, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Bird Cage, Victor/Victoria, Easy A.

Musical tastes are eclectic and encompass soul, rock, classical, & jazz including Ben Folds, Tony Tone Toni, Prefab Sprout, Human League, Madonna, Hall & Oates, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Jethro Tull, Joni Mitchell, Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin, Beatles, Smokey Robinson, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Jobim, Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Leonard Bernstein, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Harry Warren, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Scott Joplin, Stravinsky, Carl Orff, Paul Hindemith, Debussy, Ravel, Holst, Brahms, Handel, Bach.

Food – pretty open except for fried food; love most of what's offered in Italian, Thai, Japanese, & California cuisines.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Music, tennis, coffee, backpacking, reading, and good friends/conversation (not necessarily in that order). I'm glad they asked for six, because nothing else comes close to those 6!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Where we're all headed, as individuals and as a society. I want to find someone special to help make it all worthwhile and fulfilling.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Kicking back and watching a high-class cinematic offering.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Um, let me get back to you. It wouldn't be private if it goes on the interwebs, right?
