My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I am contemplative, empathic, and mindful. I'm a nerd, a hippie, a vegetarian, a programmer, a dungeon master, a democratic socialist, a slut, a game designer, a reader, a bicyclist, a philosopher, a Minnesotan, a listener, and a optimist.

I'm always curious about what motivates people and how things work, and I enjoy making things work better and making people happy. I think that potlucks are the best kind of party. I like to bike.

I've never had heartbreak that wasn't worth it.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm a game developer. In 2012 I moved to silicon valley to program for Cryptic Studios and helped make Neverwinter. In November 2013 I quit to try and make my own game, and now I'm back in my favorite city leading a team of Minnesotan game developers.

Before I moved I had weekly dinner/movie nights and weekly board game nights; I'm working towards building a community here.

The game I'm making is a couch-multiplayer, cooperative, procedurally-generated 2D platformer. You can see it at If you try our demo, please send me feedback!
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I'm pretty good at math, cooking, chess, giving deep massages, wood working and carpentry, whistling, and deconstructing arguments. I'm really good at finding wonder in things and being happy.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
do not describe me well.

I listen to the radio shows The Moth, RadioLab, and especially This American Life. I often start a sentence with "There was an episode of This American Life..."

I've seen some people add games to this section, and that makes me so happy to see; I'd better do it myself. I most like games that create a whole world and games that combine skill and carefully customizing a character, that is, western RPGs. StarControl 2, the Diablo series, and The Elder Scrolls series stand out. Also fast precise platformers like Mega Man X and Super Meat Boy, strategic games like Civilization and StarCraft, and lots of small clever games like FTL, Portal, Terraria, Thomas Was Alone, and Natural Selection.

My favorite books are The Caves of Steel, by Isaac Asimov, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert Heinlein, The Dispossessed, by Ursula K. LeGuin, Watership Down, by Richard Adams, The Children of Hurin, by JRR Tolkien, and Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card.

I enjoy almost every movie I see. The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, I Heart Huckabees, Ink, The Secret of Kells, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog are really good.

I'm a bit late-blooming when it comes to music. I like Irish music. I like to dance to dance music. I like most acoustic alternative music, sappy stuff. I also like protest and folk songs, especially ones that are good for singing along. I like the Rise Up Singing songbook. Regina Spektor, Flogging Molly, Daft Punk, Tchaikovsky. I like to whistle.

I'm a vegetarian. I like Mexican food, Italian food, Indian food, Ethiopian food, and cheesy food. I like to cook and bake. I like fruit and candy.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
-I need the weather. I don't believe that change, growth, or progress can happen without it.
-Potlucks are the best kind of party. Don't find many, but when I do...ohh boy.
-Periodic creative outlets. Rarely the same thing twice in a row, but if I go too long without creating something I both enjoy and am proud of, I start getting anxious.
-But without my share of sponge time, being creative is too draining. I need to be able to purely absorb stuff other people have made sometimes.
-Being puzzled is important. And there are so many things to puzzle over!
-Other people.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Times when natural selection is sub-optimal. Times when less efficient things are better. Furniture designs. Potential Halloween costumes. Hypothetical conversations. Machine learning. How actions make people feel. Game design.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Probably working later than I meant to then falling asleep or playing a computer game. Once a month hosting a board game night.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
