My self-summary
Academic professor, formerly non-academic engineer (secretly mechanic), throughly I am non-traditional when outside the towers. Former a Kiwi, now Americanized via immersion, I consider myself a citizen of the brave new world. I am very excited to build, travel, mediate between science, technology, health and immersive art, and get to do this way more than I ever expected.
What I’m doing with my life
I am working, albeit slowly, to change the world, one piece of electronic health information at a time, and during that, seek to quantify myself, illuminate the information darkness, and stay 30 seconds ahead of everybody else. I love designing for intent, structure of systems and organizations, and the potential to change the culture of "old" science.

Big news is that I am moving to California! eeeeeeeeee. So very excited, somewhat petrified - but all signs point to August, in Davis, Sacramento or wherever I can park my Spitfire.
I’m really good at
Building things, observing, being generous. I seek out critters for attention, music to spin, and themes and theories that unpack in my dreams at night (see Transmetropolitan)

Aaand- I am awesome at fixing things, bolts to bits, and I love extreme picnicking. Beach Bocce and gin and tonics are a huge favorite.
The first things people usually notice about me
I have an ambiguous accent, and I love talking, and am fast.

"Where are you from" they say
"New Zealand"
"Ah, I hear that is beautiful"
"It is the west coast of the US but upside down and with less people"
"Where in New Zealand they say?"
"Oh, I'm just a JAFA" I say, and proud of it
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
old-wave, new wave, punk, garage and some heavy metal. Classical guitar, ukulele, experimental, pop and occasional lady gaga

Bad brains, Big Country, Wedding Present, Sonic Youth, Clash, Buzzcocks, Iggy Pop, Halo Benders, James Brown, Jonny Cash, Throwing Muses, Melvins, Mecca Normal, Tall Dwarves, Rush, Talking Heads, the Cramps

I read tons of Science Fiction (helps keep my head on straight in my day job), as well a travel/outdoor books, I love John McPhee, Bill Bryson, John Muir (re-reading all of that).
The six things I could never do without
tools and designs and creative space
critters and habitats
deep and immersive books
bright skies and clear water
New Zealand pies, custard and pineapple chunks
a thousand shining mountains
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Health, Science, robots and loud guitar music. And increasingly about California.
On a typical Friday night I am
Skiing, building something, traveling or bittorrenting Dr. Who
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Um - I probably have faults?

“There is a crack in everything.
That's how the light gets in.”
― Leonard Cohen

You should message me if
I'm moving to Davis! Or Sacramento, or somewhere. In August - which is millions of years away. It's official, so you should message me if you think there is something I simply need to know about that, or where I should go to get a decent Margarita.
