I am curious, intellectual, and sometimes illogical.

My Self-Summary

As is not unusual in the bay area, I'm a computer geek. I like robots, think Maker Faire is pretty cool, and read xkcd of course. I believe I have sufficient knowledge of Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Monty Python to hold up my end in a conversation. I would like to know more about telescopes and music theory. It's probably best if you are amused by people with odd interests.

What I’m doing with my life

For the last few years I've been pretty devoted to work, but it's time to bring some balance to that. I want to meet more people, have more fun, travel more, and find something new that's worth devoting real effort.

Things I've done that I might like to do again under the right circumstances: helped throw raves, helped throw a Burning Man camp, hiked, snowboarded, sang Karaoke, played D&D, travelled around the U.S. and Canada. Not doing any of that currently though.

Things I haven't done much of but would like to someday: travel to other continents, play keyboards in a band (it would have to be a very tolerant band).

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Not into sports, but lately my weekend hasn't felt complete without a long bike ride.

Books: favorite authors include Neal Stephenson, Ursula K. Le Guinn, Neal Gaiman, and Scott McCloud.

Music: I play piano off and on, dabbling in blues and jazz; not wonderful but I enjoy it. Some artists I've been a big fan of at one time or another include Rush, Weird Al, Orbital, Nina Simone, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, The Bobs, Medeski Martin & Wood, The Bad Plus. The last concert I went to was by Mika. Surprised to find I like Girl Talk even though I normally don't like rap.

Movies: I make sure to see the latest from Studio Ghibli and Pixar and random foreign films or art films. The latest movie that I really liked: Coraline.

TV: not that often and usually via Netflix. I liked Firefly enough to watch it twice, watched Battlestar Galactica to the end, and catch the occasional Daily Show or Colbert episode on the Internet.

The six things I could never do without

Not being in a survivalist mood, I'm going to retitle this "six possessions that I would miss a lot, some of which I'll name later."

For now:
- A computer and fast Internet connection. Oh wait, actually I need to get *away* from the computer.
- A piano or digital keyboard.
- A bike.
- Google search and Wikipedia, to quickly satisfy random curiosity.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How to do cool stuff with computers. How to make work more fun and less frustrating. Things in the news. Random bits of Internet culture. Things I am procrastinating about. New reasons to get out of the house.

On a typical Friday night I am

Surfing the Internet, watching a movie, working on a program or perhaps playing piano.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm not admitting anything, so instead I will tell you some amazing [1] true [2] facts:

Did you know that the Andromeda Galaxy would appear to be more than six times the width of the full moon, if it weren't too faint to see most of it without a telescope?

That the Giant Squid is not the largest squid? There is an even bigger one called the Colossal Squid, which has only once been caught alive.

That there is a sailboat that can go over 50 knots and an airplane that gets over 45 miles per gallon?

[1] at least, I thought they were amazing

You should message me if

You're nearby and think we might have fun hanging out: go for a bike ride, go on a hike, see a movie, go to a jazz club, and so on.

Also, for a limited time, I will send an amazing true fact to anyone who says hi. (OKCupid's "icebreaker" thing doesn't count.)
