The day is short, and I have many a nit to pick.

Dec 13, 2006

Which type of neighborhood most appeals to you?
  • Rural - Lots of land, not a neighbor to be seen.
  • Rural - But not too far from town.
  • Suburban - A descent yard and good neighbors.
  • Urban - An apartment or condo.

THAT'S NOT HOW YOU SPELL DECENT GODSDAMNIT.

That is all. Move along.

An image of FroggyGurl So a descent yard would be one that is always going downhill no matter what direction you move in?

An image of MangoDuJour Perhaps they mean suburban, and on a hill. Or it could be a witty rejoinder based on breaking apart the word "suburban" into its Latin roots, "sub" (below) and "urban" (urban). If you really had a suburban neighborhood, you would need to descend from the city to that neighborhood, and thus a "descent yard" would be possible.

Perhaps they meant a descant yard, for choirs?

Couldn't be, froggy. such a thing would be a point. A big pyramid of dirt with an impossibly pointy top. I don't think dirt clumps that way. They must mean a descent into something. maybe you're supposed to descend it with your neighbors into mediocrity.

I have a "sinking" feeling that there was no "deep" intent to this error. English is a foolish language in that how a word is spelled has almost nothing to do with how it is pronounced. It's nothing to get too "down" about. (Exit, stage left, dodging rotten tomatoes)

torquemada, or maybe a desiccant yard, so you never have to mow the lawn.

An image of Brassens No, I think they mean a yard on an incline--one that descends...

Brassens commented on Dec 15, 2006

An image of atlantaman Nahh, they're totally referring to a dungeon, surrounded with fences -- "fences make good neighbors" -- in the suburbs. Maybe the question author was a fan of Silence of the Lambs.

An image of thryn Actually, I take it back. This is obviously a subtle nod to Darwin's less quoted work "The Descent of Yard."

An image of munchwolf A yard with beastmen and ogres .. and twisty little passages

Heh. Perhaps they're still descending into decency.

An image of NMcCoy You are standing in a descent yard west of a suburban house.
