My self-summary
I make friends easily. I am interested, at least a little bit, in almost everything. I take pleasure in the simple and the strange. I am originally from the west coast and moved to New York rather accidentally. I've only ever been to Europe on layovers on my way to West Africa, although some day I would love for that to change.
What I’m doing with my life
Teaching kids about robots and the internet for a technology education non-profit part of the time, and doing freelance illustration, and art direction part of the time.

On Tuesdays I get to work with a group of high schoolers who are learning to design assistive technology to help people with Cerebral Palsy make art more easily. Needless to say, Tuesdays are my favorite.

I'm also active with an organization in Liberia that puts girls into school, and spent this past summer over there helping set up an arts program for them.

I spend plenty of time goofing off and drinking beer too, though.
I’m really good at
Getting strangers to tell me their life story without me asking, starting the dance party, winning at card games, drawing portraits of my friends, asking questions, telling stories, listening, collaborating, problem solving, making things happen.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Authors: I enjoy fiction and non-fiction in equal measure: Truman Capote, Alice Walker, Ray Bradbury, Richard Brautigan, Richard Dawkins, Oliver Sacks, Joe Klein Currently reading: Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga
I also appreciate the well-made graphic novel: Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelman, Marjane Sartapi Etc.

Movies: I love a good film, but I hardly ever sit down and watch them. I guess in general, I like old westerns, stupid funny movies, documentaries, Cool Hand Luke, The Warriors, Jurassic Park Repo Man...

Shows: Arrested Development, Freaks & Geeks, Breaking Bad, Archer, 30 Rock, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Star Trek: TNG, and of course, The Simpsons Lately I have been watching RuPaul's Drag Race and I am a little embarrassed to admit that I cannot get enough of it.

Music: I am a dedicated appreciator of the best (and occasionally worst) that any genre has to offer. just to name a very few: Otis Redding, Elvis Costello, The Velvet Underground, Television & Nina Simone.
Stevie Wonder, Thin Lizzy, Townes Van Zandt, Slick Rick, Sam Cooke, Black Sabbath, The Gun Club, Jonathan Richman, Paul Simon, The Mountain Goats, Radiohead, Habib Koite, Brian Eno Woody Guthrie, The Raincoats, Suicide, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Ledbelly, The Dictators, Patti Smith, & Dolly Parton.

I am also nerd for Podcasts:: Radiolab, This American Life, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, Selected Shorts, The Moth or a number of others.

And as for Food I am willing to try anything that is made well, but Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, and Mexican are probably my favorites. One of the things I miss the most about San Francisco is all the Burmese restaurants they have there. I also love to Cote D'Ivoireian food joint down the street from my house.
The six things I could never do without
Paper
Pen/Pencils
Good People
Humor
Music
A healthy curiosity about the world
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How lucky I am.
And,
evolution, education, people, places, the universe, music, current affairs, the last thing I read, my next projects, and how to make the world around me better, if only marginally.

Also, April - October I spend more time then I probably should thinking about baseball. (specifically my san francisco giants!)
On a typical Friday night I am
Somewhere with at least two of the following things:

-beer, gin or whiskey
-music playing
-trees or the ocean
-dancing (the sweaty living-room dance party kind, most often)
-a good crew of friends
-a paintbrush, pastel, pencil or pen
-hysterical laughter
-something cookin'
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I am mildly dyslexic and I wear glasses because when I take them off I have a little bit of a lazy eye. Hopefully you think lazy eyes and the ability to read backwards are endearing?

-You, too, decided to set up an okcupid account after draining a bottle of wine with a friend who convinced you it was a good idea and not totally mortifying.
-You like the idea of cooking food and listening to soul music, going to a museum, taking a hike, or a bike ride. You don't mind a long car ride, or not having a plan.
