My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I am Tom Black. Giant, gentle, friendly, smart, goofy, gamer, nerd, hacker, overweight, nervous.

It took a bit longer than normal, but I feel that I am finally an adult. I have a mortgage, left the first job I liked, and have professional movers for my relocation to Pittsburgh. Part of this transition is the ability to express that I am awesome. I have been awesome for a long time, but I had a terrible time expressing that to others.

I am here because I am past the period where I may meet new people easily, and wish to share my awesomeness with another awesome person. You are probably awesome. I believe in you!
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Recently moved back to Pittsburgh to do good in the world. I used to do good and my new digs will continue that trend. I am privileged to continue to do work that has a tangible feeling of making the world a better place, and that is important to me.

But yeah, life change. I was pretty well settled in the DC area fighting the good fight for the man. That ended, combined with some external tragedy, so I uprooted and now live in Pittsburgh. I lived here once before, when I briefly attended CMU.

I am a handful of classes into my Masters, working for another Degree in Computer Science. I heart computers, and this degree is less about a check-mark and more about learning. Once I'm settled and sorted in the Pitt; I hope to apply to one of the great schools to learn more.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Putting others before myself.
Fixing things.
Breaking things.
Sleeping in.
Reaching the top shelf.
Public speaking.

I am not good at remembering names for people I just met, or noticing innuendo.
The first things people usually notice about me

I'm a giant. I'm a bit rotund. Also, the beard. And now, the colorful hair.

Also, I am a huge geek. Also, a huge nerd. I like all the nerd things, and am not ashamed of them. I play video games, board games, and even NERDIER things if you can imagine. Tolerance, acceptance, or embrace of this culture is a pretty important part of getting along with me.

I like manly things. This is a requirement since I grew a beard.

But the beard is kind, and likes the following specific things: VNV Nation, spicy Indian food, bad movies, and books about programming puzzles.

I like music used in movies, trailers, and videos. You know that awesome music from the trailer for that cool movie? I probably own that. I like that stuff, plus EBM, Industrial, Rock, Alternative & classical music.

A better question is what do I do to enjoy my favorite things? I sometimes go to concerts (ex. VNV Nation, Video Games Live, ...). Near where I lived in Virginia there was a strong Indian community and that meant a variety of really awesome Northern and Southern Indian places. Visited them a lot (and why I am fat!).

As direct answers go, I love the hell out of Doctor Who.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How things work. Understanding systems is what I do for my job, and I spend a lot of time learning how the pieces connect.

I also do this in real life. How are relationships supposed to work with all the cultural baggage that sitcoms, romantic comedies, and Harlequinn romance novels try to dump on us? It's fucking complicated and contrary and I don't see how anyone with a brain has found someone else.

What we are taught, and how things work, in regards to how people interact with each other, is a fucking Grand Canyon of differences. I spend a lot of time thinking about that, a few angst ridden paragraphs expressing my frustration with that establishment in this free form text box.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Friday night is a great night to host friends for a casual event, go see a movie, or play games. Or at work!

My place is a good venue for hosting friends, so I'd frequently try to host movie nights. Invite a bunch of nearby friends, and pick out 2-3 movies to show. Typical selection would include one mainstream movie (Iron Man, Kill Bill, etc.); one strange or foreign film (Troll Hunter, Cube, etc.); and one TERRIBLE movie (Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, Robot Geisha, Zardoz, etc.). I would cook everyone waffles, we'd drink beer, and enjoy heckling or watching movies together.

Waffles are awesome. Especially of the Belgian variety. Just saying.

Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You are a woman who isn't dainty, enjoys life, and likes men. You should be able to embrace or enjoy geek culture pursuits, even if you are only on the edge of that culture yourself. I am knee deep in it, and don't want to be rescued from it.

I want someone who has their eyes on the future, with plans, career, and hope. And those plans and hopes ought to include starting a family.

You are awesome and wish to compare notes on being awesome. Note: you are awesome. I like talking with people with difference experiences or backgrounds and hearing their stories. Tell me your story and if you want to hear mine, I can spill.
