I’m awfully flexible – I like everything that's packed full of
content, engaging, and structured to be read. I grew up reading SF;
I've adored the Deed of Packsennarion by Elizabeth Moon since I was
a teenager; Kiln People by Greg Bear is my idea of the perfect
light read; I loved Papillion; I couldn’t put down Steven Fry’s
last book; and I’m a pretty big keener on anything gardening
related (though I’m still a terrible gardener – thus the research.)
I love to have my mind expanded. I also find myself drawn pretty
strongly to nonfiction these days, from "Heat : How to Keep the
Planet From Burning" to books about the human psyche. It annoys me
that it's sometimes hard to tell which books are based on opinion,
and which on scientific reasearch AND opinion, until I get a book
home from the library.
I liked Memento, Run Lola Run, X-Men 1 and 2 but not 3, Finding
Nemo, Schindler’s List, and a ton of movies I’m forgetting. (My
memory: not my strong suit.) Although I really enjoy more serious
movies, the world is a pretty serious place - there's only so much
misery I can deal with per month, and helping my friends through
tough spots usually wins over watching a movie about suffering
people. I'm a pretty dedicated documentary watcher.
My music player includes Ani Difranco, Voltaire, Infected Mushroom,
Cat Empire, Holly Cole, Dar Williams, Dvotchka, the Dresden Dolls,
NIN, System of a Down, Balkan Beat Box, SJ Tucker… and as many
local bands as I have time to fall in love with (Hello Beautiful,
Heather Dale and Augusta are awesome.)
I hate the monikor 'world music' (as in, music from outside of
Canada and the US? Wha?) but I love good middle eastern rythms,
hand drumming of all kinds, violins AND fiddles, and lyrics that
tug at the heartstrings.
The Veganomicon and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World rock my
vegan culinary world, or are at least staples of it. I like Fressen
(but don’t love it), adore Zen Kitchen in Ottawa, and also am a big
fan of Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, good pub food… pretty much
the only thing I have never been excited about is brussel sprouts,
and even they are tasty if done right. =)
