My self-summary
I listen to NPR, except when they're doing pledge drives. Or whenever Ryan Warner is on CPR.

I was in the Navy for twelve years and got out so I could go to grad school for something other than business.

I joined the swim team and learned to scuba to help overcome my fear of water. It's better now.

I tried to read one hundred books in a year as a bet with myself.

I want to learn German just so I can sing along with "99 Luftballoons."

I have three tattoos, none of them visible in "professional" attire, and plans for a fourth, fifth, and sixth. We'll see.

I think the Butterfly Pavilion is Westminster is potentially the creepiest place ever. Wouldn't know, never been there.
What I’m doing with my life
I just got accepted to grad school; I'll be starting at Naropa in the fall, but need to brush up on my yoga first.

I want to make a living as a writer, but more likely it'll be as something professional (like teaching) and I'll write on the side.

Just got my first piece published:

I’m really good at
I am an excellent driver, especially on road trips.

I read and write as much as I can, even when I should be doing other things.

I talk to dogs like they are children and children like they are dogs.

I once thought the following things were fads and wouldn't last:
-DVDs
-iPods
-iTunes
-Angry Birds
The first things people usually notice about me
Maybe my eyes? I believe in looking people in the eyes when you talk to them.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: If I could find a job that would pay me to read, I'd be set. Until then, I go more for authors than titles, including Tim O'Brien, Karl Marlantes, Ray Bradbury, Michael Chabon, Mark Helprin.
I think someone without books in their house is suspicious and trying to hide something (though books are also an excellent place to hide things, like rock hammers).

Movies: I've worked at two movie theaters in my life, which afforded me ample opportunity to watch movies. Some of my favorites are Shawshank Redemption, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom, Kings of Summer, Way Way Back, A New World, Tigerland, Goonies, Spaghetti Westerns (especially the Dollars Trilogy), Wall*E.

TV: I hope the new Cosmos is as cool as the old one. Also Community (first two seasons), The Office (US) (Seasons 1-5, part of 6), The West Wing, Band of Brothers, Parks and Rec, Daily Show, Colbert Report, Arrested Development, cooking shows (but not eating shows, like Guy Fieri… "a troll doll come to life wandering the lands in search of garbage to put in its mouth") and travel shows (but not Man vs. Food type shows), Lost, documentaries, and Game of Thrones.

Music: Pretty much everything under the sun. Recent music includes:
-A Silent Film
-The Head and the Heart
-The Decembrists
-Aloe Blacc
-The Airborne Toxic Event (my favorite band EVER) (<-use of all caps justified due to my love for the band) (seen them five times over the past few years, and hope to one day see them again)
-The Kongos (!!)
-Noah & the Whale
-Mumford & Sons
-Iron & Wine (I do like a good use of an ampersand)
-Snow Patrol

Food: Basically everything/anything.
The six things I could never do without
-Time to read and write
-Good conversation
-A variety of food
-A passport
-My laptop
-A comfortable place to lay my head (this is very open to interpretation; I've used my jacket as a pillow for extended periods of time)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The future
The present
The past
Putting together a profile that will catch someone's interest enough to have her write back
On a typical Friday night I am
Reading, writing, watching movies… My Friday nights were much more wild and crazy when I was in the Navy.

I'd like to get into a routine, or even a non-regular routine, but right now I'm waiting for grad school to kick in.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
When I was a kid I was hugely afraid of alien invasion, or a comet hitting the Earth, and bears, and alien abductions (my older brother was a huge influence in this part of my life)
