Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm a tad sarcastic, but sometimes people misread it as me being
snarky. I'm nice, I promise. OK, a little snarky too. I crave
conversations that make me think and interactions that make me
smile. And I'm easily entertained, not easily impressed.
I love trying new things, especially new foods, and it's really
rare that I say 'no' to something. I also love getting my hands on
books or anything to expand my mind and get perspective.
Something most people wouldn't guess about me is that I like being
the one pursued. I don't tend to make the first move. Part of it is
that I'm attracted to semi-assertive/confident/bordering-on-cocky
types and so I find the pursuit to be very sexy.
I identify as being non-monogamous. If you're not sure what that
means, feel free to ask, but it's really different depending on the
person. So it's mostly a let's-see-what-this-feels-like sort of
thing on a case-by-case basis.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I am a PhD candidate in Higher Education at Loyola University
Chicago and that keeps me pretty busy. I tend to be writing a lot,
and I'm about to teach my first solo graduate-level class so I'm
psyched and crossing my fingers I don't screw this up. ;)
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Adding movies to my Netflix queue and staying on top of my weekly
Hulu rotation. Being snobby about beer. Making brownies out of a
box with instructions. Hating snow (really good at this).
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My facial hair?
My winning smile?
Let's meet and you can tell me what to put here.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
I tend to really like social-justice-y books, like "That's
Revolting: Queer Resistance to Assimiliation" and "Feminism for
Real". One of my favorite books is Robert Fisk's "The Great War for
Civilisation" and I love Peter Balakian's "Black Dog of Fate". My
current reading list is rather geeky thanks to the whole PhD thing,
but includes things like "Queering the Color Line", "Decolonizing
Trans/Gender 101", and "Critical Ethnography".
My at-home movie-watching leans towards documentaries and
non-mainstream movies like "The Square", "Stud Life" and "The
Forgiveness of Blood". My favorite documentary is "Slingshot Hip
Hop", and I enjoy "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards". I
also have a strange affinity for cooking competitions like "The
Taste" and teen TV shows like "Pretty Little Liars". Currently
watching all of "Gilmore Girls" on Netflix. I have an intense
weekly Hulu rotation, which includes "Faking It", "Black-ish", "Law
& Order: SVU", "Nashville", "Red Band Society", "Grey's
Anatomy", "Scandal", "How to Get Away With Murder", "Shark Tank",
"Cristela", "Revenge" and "Once Upon a Time".
I like most kinds of music, except for most country, and I'm not
much of a metalhead. I prefer socially conscious rap and R&B to
the commercial stuff, and I enjoy a good dance party. I'm an
introvert so it takes a couple of drinks before I can start shaking
my groove thing tho.
I love food! That's it.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Human interaction. Books. Sunshine. Loved ones. Traveling.
P.S. This turned out to be a much more touchy-feely list than I
think my personality would have people believe I would come up
with. Oh also... cause I'm a rebel like that, here's a 7th thing:
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How I change my perception of circumstances I find myself in. How
to survive this interesting world of academia as a queer trans*
person of color without selling my soul in the process. What
wellness and self-care means and looks like. Whether to watch one
more episode of "A Different World" or just go to bed.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
I don't know that my Friday nights are particularly different from
other nights. They depend on my mood and my friends'
availabilities. Maybe a little work/reading/writing, catching up on
shows, out for drinks, a movie, or a date, a walk on the beach when
the weather is nice.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I cheat on the nutritional plan my trainer gives me by eating a
cookie and not logging it on my app. Shhh
