My Self-Summary

I started out affable and well adjusted. Then I got into an odd solitary phase. Then the rise and fall of a long serious relationship. Now I am affable and well adjusted once again.

I’ve moved around a lot, and I'm brand new to Philly. I used to be politically radical, but now I see things scientifically. I’m not sure if this is good or bad. I’m an atheist but I have a soft spot for Christians. I don’t eat meat but I wear leather. There is no justification.

What I’m doing with my life

I’m getting my PhD in Sociology. I don’t love every minute of it, but I do love most of them. I hope to teach and do research that is helpful to somebody in some way, sometime this century.

I’m really good at

Avoiding birds (they terrify me). Coexisting with mice (I have no choice).

The first things people usually notice about me

I’ve gotten really good at unflinching eye contact, so people find me attentive. I’m willing to patronize just about anybody.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I started reading John Updike last year after he kicked it, and I can’t stop. Pura vida. I’ve also been reading Brothers Karamazov on-and-off for the past six months; it works best in small doses. Another writer I like is Haruki Murakami. I also read non-fiction.

At one time, music had to be funky, jammy, jazzy, or twangy or in order to interest me. These days I’m finding eclecticism overrated; my rock must be pure.

I like watching and then discussing movies of all kinds. For better or worse, it’s how my family relates. I also like quite a few TV shows, especially the premium HBO stuff.

On a typical Friday night I am

If it’s a weekend night, I’m preferably in a bar. Sometimes I stay home with misguided hopes of studying. Then I procrastinate and feel stupid for not going out.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I’m a decent dancer, but only when I can see my own shadow.
