I am introspective, inquisitive, and bibliophilic.

My Self-Summary

A nerdy, bookish information junkie with an affinity for science fiction, vintage computer games, and obscure cultural ephemera. Predominantly introverted, but prone to the occasional torrid burst of extroversion. An incorrigible activist, shameless aesthete, and rather more sedate academic. Often sedated, but not always.

What I’m doing with my life

Currently finishing up my undergrad degree in English at U of T, with sights set on grad school. The year after graduation will most likely involve teaching ESL overseas or bumming around Montreal with a bunch of questionable hipster-types. Hey, a girl's entitled to some time off, right?

I’m really good at

Discourse analysis.
Putting theory into practice.
Debating "hot button" issues until my mouth is dry (and my eyes are red).
Sleeping lots or not at all.

I'm also a kick-ass RPG player. Woo!

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Music
Joy Division, The Smiths, The Mountain Goats, Bob Dylan, Neutral Milk Hotel, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Devendra Banhart, Beirut, Aimee Mann, The Magnetic Fields, Belle & Sebastian, The Velvet Underground, Nick Cave, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Radiohead, The Replacements, Big Star, etc. Classical obsessions: Bach, Glenn Gould, Beethoven, Schubert, Shostakovich, Chopin, and the like.

Movies
High Fidelity, Ghost World, Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Love and Death, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, Blood Simple, Rosemary's Baby, Blue Velvet, Blade Runner, Aliens, Vertigo, etc.

Books
Non-fiction: Lots, generally feminist/critical theory and philosophy.
Fiction: Thomas Pynchon, J.L. Borges, Kazuo Ishiguro, J.M. Coetzee, Nikolai Gogol, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Djuna Barnes, Virginia Woolf, Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Ursula K. Le Guin, Philip K. Dick, William Gibson, etc.
Poetry: John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Gwendolyn MacEwen, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats, Philip Larkin, W.H. Auden, William Blake, John Keats, John Donne, etc.

Food
Mexican, Italian, Lebanese, Japanese, Thai, Jamaican, etc.

The six things I could never do without

1. Good friends/family
2. Solitude (in measured doses)
3. My bookshelf
4. Laughter
5. Music
6. A bottomless supply of caffeine

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Language and literature.
Art in social context.
Identity politics.
Theory (it's a love/hate relationship).
Human relationships in all of their messiness and general strangeness.
The hunger which is not for food.

Note: I tend to read way too much poetry.

On a typical Friday night I am

Reading. Drinking. Drinking while reading. And sometimes dancing.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm a die-hard romantic. *winces*

You should message me if

You are female and/or queer. Straight boys need not apply.
You can spell... correctly.
You're interesting.
You find me interesting.
The possibility of actually meeting in person doesn't make you shiver in abject terror. I'm a busy girl, and while long, leisurely, drawn-out online correspondence can be fun, I just don't have the time for it right now.
You want to discuss Judith Butler et al. over cappuccinos.
