Genetics PhD student, aerialist, dancer, costume designer, author,
and a few other things.
What I’m doing with my life
Right now I'm getting a PhD at Stanford; I hope to graduate in the
fall. I also hope to land in academia eventually. But not before I
run away and join the circus for a year or so.
I’m really good at
Telling stories. Before I can even remember, I was reading novels
and writing epics (they were difficult for anyone else to read due
to a lack of orthography or penmanship, but epics nonetheless).
Even in science, it's one of my strongest suits: finding a story
that motivates a string of otherwise disconnected experiments. And
it's what I love about aerials as well -- dance provides me another
way to tell stories, more expressive and directly emotional than my
The first things people usually notice about me
I am tiny, and yet, I seem larger than I am.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I have most of Peter Pan memorized, as well as much of Pride and
Prejudice, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and Arcadia. I go
back to the Nicomachean Ethics when I am feeling sad or at sea.
Winter's Tale made me cry, and I smile every time I see The Master
and Margarita. I could read Borges forever and not get bored.
When I need to smile, I watch Get Shorty or Sky Captain and the
World of Tomorrow. I have a soft spot for over-the-top musicals,
and know almost all of the lyrics to more of them than I can easily
list (although West Side Story will always be my first love).
I eagerly await and watch new episodes of Doctor Who. I somewhat
less eagerly await new episodes of Castle, Bones, Community, and
Game of Thrones. When I need a netflix binge, I rewatch
My musical taste can probably best be described as eclectic. Right
now I am listening to a lot of Macklemore, Imagine Dragons, Mumford
and Sons, and Gaelic Storm.
When I cook, my defaults are stuffed squash, risotto, and pasta
carbonara. Jamaican patties remind me of childhood, as do
hamentashen and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Tomatoes, basil,
and mozarella are a combination that is almost impossible to beat.
Chicago pizza is the best pizza, and is rarer than diamonds outside
of Chicagoland. And almost everything tastes better when flavored
The six things I could never do without
My journal, and a pen to write in it
A good book in case I am inspirationless
A mug of hot tea
A comfortable pair of shoes to walk in
Something to climb
Something to ponder
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What stories do I want to tell: in my research, in my writing, and
in my dance? How can I best tell them? Are they true, will they
resonant with their audiences?
What stories do I tell myself, and how do I let them define me?
On a typical Friday night I am
At the gym, rehearsing or training. Or at a social dance event.
More rarely, in lab.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
If it was truly private, I wouldn't admit it here.
You should message me if
You are contemplative, nerdy, and have altogether too many hobbies
- like me.
