I am good, gooder, and goodest.

My Self-Summary

This is not so much a summary as a nebulous outline.

I'm an Irish-Canadian going to school in the US. I'm a floozy for intellectualism: I like math and science - physics in particular, but they're all good - philosophy (the good parts) and literature (the good parts). Poor spelling and astrology make my limbic system cry.

I'm pretty laid-back... I think I'm an easy person to be with. I don't talk too much, but I can carry a conversation. You can probably get a good feel for my sense of humor from this profile. A friend once called me "a grower, not a shower", meaning I don't betray much of myself quickly, but it comes out eventually.

I suspect many of these characters are not that brilliant.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm doing a Ph.D. in applied math. I study control of quantum systems. I'd like to turn it into a professorship at a research university. Teaching would be nice too.

Once, I had thought about working on Wall St., but circumstance has rendered that unlikely. At least now I don't have to sell my soul.

I'd like to live in Europe at some point.

I'd like to write a novel sometime (but really, who doesn't?).

I’m really good at

Evading questions?

I play the piano pretty well. I don't do classical music any more, since I don't have the discipline, but I like taking pop songs and coming up with piano and voice arrangements.

I'm good at math, but I know a lot of people who are too, so it feels like I'm not.

Also, people tell me that me write good.

The first things people usually notice about me

Uh, you'll have to ask people. Seriously, how is anyone supposed to answer this question without sounding conceited?

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: The Count of Monte Cristo, Borges' Collected Fictions, Catch-22, Ulysses.

Movies: Gattaca, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Unforgiven, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation.

TV: Planet Earth, Arrested Development, Futurama, Firefly/Serenity, House, Homicide: Life on the Street, the Sopranos.

Music: U2, NIN, Coldplay, Beethoven, Counting Crows, Elton John.

Food: anything with sour cream in it.

The six things I could never do without

- the excitement of things that are new

- sarcasm

- xkcd

- tomorrow

- the planet Jupiter. It acts as a gravity sink, deflecting meteors/asteroids whose impacts would have prevented life from developing on Earth.

- cheese

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How I can be better.

Why there is so little time.

Lots of physics stuff.

On a typical Friday night I am

I like to go out when I can, as long as there are friends to go with and/or something to do. Often I will stay home and read though. Of course, typicality is not something that one should be aiming for on a Friday night.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

For a number of years, I was significantly overweight (287 pounds was the peak), but lost most of the excess through running.

Once, I fell in love with a TV actress. Her obliviousness to me broke my heart.

I really wanted to be a pro basketball player when I was a kid.

I believe eating meat is sort of wrong, but I do it anyway.

You should message me if

Well, I'm not going to tell you who you should go around messaging. I haven't given OK Cupid much attention since I signed up, so if I don't respond (or haven't responded), don't be offended.
