I am hardcore-smart, stupid-funny, and hyphen-crazy.

My Self-Summary

I write for a living. I've worked as a reporter, magazine writer, video game reviewer and - when I'm feeling like making some actual money - in corporate communications. I'm also a published poet who's hoping to be even more published.

I love living in California. I'm more driven by my ethics than the average person. I get by on my intuition more than most, too. I'm not much of a planner. I'm almost absurdly hopeful. I'm allegedly "talkative" and "not at all shy," but I'm still getting used to that idea. I've been told that I'm interesting, intelligent, well-spoken and very funny. I'm not sure what "interesting" is supposed to mean ...

What I’m doing with my life

I'm working for a research company near Stanford doing communications work. I take photos, write stories and memo-ish type stuff. I also do web design and web content management work. I've had photos published in four newspapers and two magazines despite not being a very good photographer. I've been published in 11 newspapers, two magazines and on five websites.

When I'm not at work, I do a pretty good job of keeping busy. I work on my poems and read. I'm in a book club and go to the gym usually four or five nights a week. I like to go out to dinner and lunch and brunch. Not usually breakfast. I'll eat almost anything, and I like trying out new places whether they're an expensive French restaurant or little hole in the wall.

I see a concert every few weeks or so. I like museums and that sort of thing, too. I like to have a drink, and I'm a total beer snob and amateur bartender. I'm happy sitting around in a pub or going to a club. If you get me drunk, I will dance – badly. Sometimes I like to just hang out at my best friend's house, drink a few antiquated cocktails and play videogames. I feel like I don't have enough time to do everything I would like, but I don't mind too much.

I’m really good at

General adventuring. I can write a pretty good poem on a good day. I can write a news story really fast almost any day. I can run three miles without getting too tired. That's about how far I can make it before I get bored. I'm a good listener most of the time. I have exceptional taste in music, and I'm almost always willing to do the things everyone else is too scared to do.

The first things people usually notice about me

According to my friend: "You have nice eyes but that sounds pretty trite. Say 'my unmatched grasp of the English language.'" I've been told I have a nice voice, too, by a couple of people, but I sing really, really badly.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

  • (A) I'm reading 2666: A Novel by Robert Bolaño
  • (B) Lately, I've been watching 30 Rock and Battlestar Galactica.
  • (C) A general mish mash of experimental stuff and hipster baloney. I am an official turbo music snob.
  • (D) I'll eat just about anything. At home I eat a lot of organic stuff, fruit, yogurt, granola, boring junk like that. I like trying new restaurants and try to hit up a new place up almost weekly.

The six things I could never do without

Friends (preferably bearing beer or a cocktail). Something to be in love with. A belief that most people will do the right thing. Something to read. Something to write. Interesting memories (even the bad ones).

And bonus item: My 2009 Volkswagen GTI. I would marry it if possible.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

My plans for the future. I have a lot of goals, and I'm always working on a scheme to achieve them.

On a typical Friday night I am

I do a lot of things. I went to a carnivorous plant store a few weeks ago. I went to three concerts this last week. We went to go see tide pools a couple of weekends ago, but totally failed. I usually try out new restaurants with friends on Fridays. I'm in a book club. I go out to bars and clubs all the time. I can't remember the last time I spent a Friday at home.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Even though I don't look it (or maybe I do?), I am really, really ticklish. Just the threat of being tickled makes me feel all ticklish.
