I've been a bit of a rolling stone for the past oh, twenty years or
so. I spent the first half of the '90s hitchhiking and riding
freight trains around the country and doing manual labor. Then I
spent eight years in Seattle bike messengeing and doing office
work. Moved to the Big City after that and did more bike
messengeing. Back to Seattle then Moloka'i then then Seattle then
the Hudson Valley then Texas then the Hudson Valley then the City
then my little Upstate hometown then the City. In 2006 in the City
I learned that I could make a living as a Tall Ship Sailor. I wish
I had discovered this sooner, alas. Now I'm a ship's engineer on a
schooner based in Mystic CT. I love being a ship's engineer but I'm
at that point in my life where I'd like to start gathering some
moss. A big ol' garden of moss to tend with a sweet and kind lady.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a ship's engineer. Like Scotty or Geordi from Star Trek. But
more often than:
- "We need more power Mister Scott!"
- "I'm giving her all she's got Captain!"
it's like, "Um, hey Chief, there's this ... smell ... coming from
the bilges in the aft cabins, um, could you look into that?"
The captain calls me Chief even though I'm the only engineer.
In the interest of gathering moss I'd like to start working on
ferries in the City or Long Island or Connecticut so I can come
home to that sweet and kind lady every night. Or maybe Seattle. Or

Then we're supposed to be sailing around southern New England and
NYC for the summer.

I’m really good at
Sailing, fixing bikes, technology, washing dishes.
The first things people usually notice about me
My glasses? I no longer have bright yellow hair.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm reading Moby Dick and The Wordy Shipmates. That's funny. Moby
dick was on the shelves of the boat I'm working on and The Wordy
Shipmates was on sale at the Seaport Museum. I really like Sarah

I love thrift store book shopping. Right now I'm reading Welcome to
the Monkey House, and a book of poems by Emily Bronte. Wuthering
Heights, Lord of the Flies, Frankenstein, Brave New World are some
of my favorite books. I also like popular science books. And Lord
of the Rings.
Kurisawa's Dreams was pretty great. I'm a bit of movie amnesiac. I
saw Shutter Island recently. I liked it. War Games was great.
My favorite bands ever are Joy Division and the Cure but I'm not
all mopey-dopey. I like rootsy America-type country like Jeff
Tweedy, Ryan Adams, the Be Good Tanyas. Greg Brown, Tom Waits.
Kimya Dawson. Galaxie 500. I love some jazz but don't know enough
about it to tell you which kind.
Most food is good, especially sushi, pho, and phad thai.
On a typical Friday night I am
wishing I had the night off, or if I have the night off, sleeping.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I probably won't message you - I'm too scared.
You should message me if
you think I seem nice
