I’m passionate and curious about the world, and my life is dedicated to making things that help me and others better understand the world. I have a deep and abiding appreciation for the weird, wonderful, and experimental. I try to surround myself with creative people who care about doing good work and have similar passions.
While I often work on things that are “virtual,” I have a real love for physical goods: paper books, records, retro computers and games. I'm primarily into music, videogames, comedy, smart sci-fi (and honestly, dumb sci-fi too). I'm introverted, but not shy. I’m generally a very friendly person, but I prefer to keep a close circle of friends. I don’t care much for having a lot of attention on me personally; I’d much rather make cool things that make people’s lives better and more enjoyable. I'm very affectionate with the people I care about, but I need a decent amount of alone time, even in serious relationships. When I am spending time with someone, I focus all my attention on being with them. I'm more of a homebody these days, but I like neighborhood dive bars, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and wandering through weird mom-and-pop stores.
I'm politically liberal and definitely #FeelTheBern (but will still support Hillary when she probably wins the nomination). Certain aspects of the current political climate and culture get me down, but I’m ultimately very optimistic that there’s a brighter future ahead of us.
I am always excited about something or other, probably many things.
What I’m doing with my life
I have a wonderful job making software with some of my best friends. When I’m not on my regular j-o-b, I’ve got a plethora of side projects that I’m trying to squeeze into my life.
I’m really good at
Figuring out huge, complicated systems under pressure. Talking too fast. Making smart-ass jokes. Being the big spoon.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Music: If you put a gun to my head, I’d say my favorite albums are My Bloody Valentine, Loveless and J Dilla, Donuts. No genre, sound, or era is off limits; I dig it all. Lately, it’s been a lot of instrumental music while I work: ambient, 90s IDM, videogame/film soundtracks, jazz, instrumental hip-hop. If I listen to something with lyrics these days, it’s usually hip-hop. I grew up on the usual indie/alt/classic rock 90s kid music, too, so that winds its way into my rotation when I’m feeling nostalgic.
Movies: I am woefully behind on modern movies, but I vow to catch up soon. The last semi-recent movie I saw that I really liked was Her. All-time faves are The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, Vertigo (anything by Hitchcock, really), Blue Velvet, Seven Samurai.
TV: The only show I watch religiously every week is Last Week Tonight. Recently, I’ve been catching up on and really enjoying Bob’s Burgers and BBC Sherlock. Other than that, Twin Peaks, classic Simpsons, Archer, Parks & Rec, Veep, Black Mirror, Mad Men.
Books: Kurt Vonnegut, Philip K. Dick, Jonathan Lethem, Haruki Murakami, computing and videogame history. I have a big list of cyberpunk and classic sci-fi that I need to read too.
Food: Except for a few dislikes, I’ll eat pretty everything that isn’t too weird. I am a sucker for a good burrito or omelette.
The six things I could never do without
Coffee, WiFi, quality headphones, a good pair of walking shoes, my RSS feed, true friends.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Virtual reality and augmented reality (I have a LOT of ideas about the technological and sociological ramifications… ask me!), how to make time for all my side projects, whether or not I’ll ever be able to afford to buy in Brooklyn…
On a typical Friday night I am
Working at my regular job (I have very flexible hours and sometimes prefer working at night), out with friends for drinks/dinner, working on side projects, or just chilling at home with TV or games.
