My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Let's see. I am single, a father of two lovely teenage girls, looking at dating after a long absence. I love ideas, discussions of ideas, making art and objects, eating and drinking and general carousal. Art and design are major interests and when I spend most of my time, researching, making and teaching. I have big brown and little white dogs. My tastes in almost anything, art, food, culture, music, are very broad. I tend towards "progressive" beliefs, like we should be fair and nice to people, hurting others is wrong, civil rights are good, those kind of "out there" thoughts. I am a skeptic, believe in the scientific method and have little truck with religion or superstitious woo. I am disorganized, creative, analytical and enjoy deep thoughts, high ideas, and low humor. And am yet undecided about the Oxford comma.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Mostly teaching architecture, art and design, trying to find a new place to live with my dogs and new workshop space. I design and make things of various types and sizes. Sometimes people even pay me for them. Spend as much time as possible on the north shore. Worrying about not writing. Seeing my incredibly busy, nearly grown and gone kids when I can. Playing with dogs. Looking for projects and collaborations.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Answering questions. Teaching. Designing things. Talking about stuff. Making things; buildings, furniture, art, noises, food, horrible jokes, cocktails, fires, solutions (not necessarily good ones, but I will come up with something).
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Hm, my often unkempt hair? My charming demeanor? My propensity to, not bloviate, but perhaps speak with more authority than I should? My joy of talking about stuff? I really have no idea. Hopefully my good side.

I love books and reading, the object itself and the contents. I have been reading quite a bit of science history and popular recreational math books, for fun and research. Just finished "The Disappearing Spoon" on the history of the periodic table. I have also been reading the same books as my kids, who fortunately have good taste in literature, avoiding twilight types and going straight for the quirky. For fun, mystery novels and the like. Had a bit of funny book synchronicity last weekend. Had borrowed a Donna Leon mystery (set in Venice, Brunetti is the protagonists name) and walked past a stack of books in another cabin, the top of which was "The Brunetti Cookbook" with recipes from the food heavy books and stories by Donna Leon. Like spotting a Kilgore Trout novel in a friends bookcase after reading "Breakfast of Champions". Or the Tuesday Next books.

I had the privilege of working at the Uptown Theater when it was a art/rep house, three different double features a week, so saw many classics, foreign films, documentaries on the big screen. While I am a pretty good critic of film (teaching a class on film and architecture this fall), I will watch almost anything. Almost. I seldom see movies out these days (other than blockbusters with the kids), wait for the Riverview or Netflicks. Love Myazaki, many Almodovar, Cohen, indies, documentries, etc.. Just watched again, "Between the Folds" on cutting edge origami. And the new "Evil Dead". And about 15 minutes of "Sharknado".

I have given up on trying to keep up with TV series in real time and now binge through Netflicks and the like. Currently catching up on Breaking Bad, have never seen Downton Abbey (for no other reason than I haven't yet), trying to catch up on Supernatural because it is my kids favorite, just finished Sons of Anarchy (I think). Again, I will watch, or try to watch mostly anything. But I may laugh about it.

Music. Many years ago the Ramones saved me from becoming a Dead Head. Moved to Minneapolis just in time to miss M80 (no new york fest) but embraced the local punk scene, lived about a block away from the CC Club. Used to throw giant parties with local bands. I grew up listening mostly to my father's Baroque and Classical selections (Gregorian Chants as a stoned teenager are pretty trippy). As I grow older my tastes in music have grown broadly. Jazz (older stuff, Miles, Sonny, Theloniuos), early blues and roots rock, hip hop (I am in love with Dessa) especially the local and/or political (Atmosphere, NWA, Public Enemy). Spent some time in New Orleans and got into that sort of Rhythm and Blues. Students and my kids help keep me current. Always loved the local scene. Like the very weird like the Residents. Old country (Williams, Cash). Old anything really. I do not have much patience for a lot of pop or misogynistic rap. I have decided there is only one zydeco song, they just keep playing it.

Food, yes, I like it. Used to be cautious around cheeses until a cheese epiphany in Burgundy with the ripest, scariest cheeses I have seen. I am an omnivore who should have much more of a dilemma about it than I do. Love the spicy cuisines of this world. I am a pretty good cook, although cooking for one sucks.
Love wine, beer and cocktails. Have fantasized about being a food historian. OK, now I am hungry.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
kids, dogs, art, humor, information access (books, journals, interwebs etc.), good food and drink, carnal pleasure, collaborations, an ability to count
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Culture, politics, art, design, stupid word play, looming disasters, what to eat, science, what the hell was it I just came in here for?
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Out with friends, students, colleagues, working in the studio, cooking and watching movies with the kids, deep in a book, wondering if it's Friday.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Here, not much. Face to face probably far too much.
