My Self-Summary

I'm an amateur (and hope-to-become professional) sociologist who loves video games, Charles Dickens, autumn, and pie. (Especially cherry pie.) Every day I try to challenge my worldview and learn something that I'd never considered.

I lived in Seattle for three years and developed a taste for pho and recycling, although Western Washington's seasons leave something to be desired. I have a tendency to sound academic when I write, no matter what I write: it makes me great at essays and complete crap at fiction. I have a few great friends that are scattered around the country, and a close family right here in Michigan. I also learned in Seattle that the people you connect with are everything, so I'm looking for good people to connect with.

What I’m doing with my life

Right now I work for the State of Michigan to pay the bills, but I hope to turn myself into a hopeless academic. In that way I never moved past being 5 years old; I can't stop asking "why," except instead of wondering about the sky being blue (which is still interesting) I wonder about the people around me, and why they do what they do.

I also spend too much time looking at lolcat pictures, but that's less relevant.

I’m really good at

I'm really good at getting my ass kicked while playing Slayer in Halo 3. I think it's because I can't jump and stay facing in the right direction.

This question makes me laugh, because the person answering the question is probably the person most unqualified to answer it. I *think* people notice that I'm friendly and open to getting to know them.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I'm a sucker for sociology books, and I get lost in them pretty easily. In terms of fiction, I love Lamb by Christopher Moore, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and The Lord of the Rings. My favorite movie is Amelie. I love documentaries and foreign films, but I buy the movies I watch over and over for fun, including MacGyver on DVD and Ironman.

The six things I could never do without

I could never do without friends, family, This American Life, pie, fuzzy socks and beer.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

I spend a lot of time thinking about how smells give me flashbacks. The smell of chilly, fresh air after it rains reminds me of a pebble in a hole in the sidewalk. Woodsmoke reminds me of a stuffed bobcat on top of a player piano. The smell of leather reminds me of hiding in my parents' closet with all of my father's dress shoes.

On a typical Friday night I am

On a typical Friday night I am usually out having a drink with friends, or in playing board games with friends. If it's a stay-at-home night, I'll watch one of my good time movies and work on something crafty. I also love going to movies alone.
