I am calm, cuddly, and considerate.
My Self-Summary
I am a nice guy. I usually try hard to make sure I do the right
thing. It can be harder than it sounds to figure out and even
harder to do sometimes.
I am happily married and
polyamorous. Our relationships with
other people are not always easy to categorize, but now that I've
said that I feel the need to try. A few friends don't even know
about our polyamorous nature - they tend to be people we know from
work or as neighbors. Our more personal friends know and are fine
with it. Some of them are not
poly themselves, but many are. Some friends
are people we used to date. Some friends are people we are a little
bit cuddly with - I like to call it
poly cuddly - we enjoy sitting next
to them and being cozy on the couch or in a hot tub, maybe sharing
a back rub or head skritch, but we aren't going to bed with them.
Then there are the people we are dating. The household is just me
and my wife and our cat for now. I can imagine a larger poly
household, but what we have now is working just fine.
What I’m doing with my life
My job is writing environmental software for people who figure out
whether they are prepared for flood or drought and which pollution
regulations might actually help. I search for hidden treasure
geocaching and
help create OpenStreetMap. I sporadically try to organize
get-togethers of
polyamorous people. Yes, that is
like herding cats.
I’m really good at
Listening, doing things with computers, being cheerful and helpful,
being sure everything will turn out fine, seeing beauty where it
might be easy to overlook it, playing with websites when I should
be working.
I am learning to juggle and to spin flag
poi without hitting myself too often. Of
course, trying to learn something new leads to the poi hitting me
more often. For night spinning I had a plan to make wind-powered
LED lighted poi using a small computer fan, but for now I have some
that light up with batteries. Maybe some day when I have had more
practice I will try fire spinning, but I am not in a hurry.
The first things people usually notice about me
I am tall and skinny.
I am a little curious to know what other first impressions I give,
but I imagine it could be difficult to seem sane while interviewing
everyone you just met to find out what they first noticed about
you.
I am really not a slave to first impressions. Sure, you can't help
but start with one, but pretty soon that becomes irrelevant as you
get to know someone.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books: I have liked a lot of books, but off the top of my head some
favorites are:
Ender's Game,
Stranger in a
Strange Land,
The Cuckoo's Egg.
Movies: The Lord of the Rings were great, of course, mostly because
they did a good job of reading the books and figuring out what they
could put in a movie. "But I'm a Cheerleader" would deserve to
achieve cult status akin to Rocky Horror, if only it were a
musical. (I have learned that someone actually made a stage musical
of it! I hope I can see someone perform it!) I still haven't
figured out whether I loved or hated Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill.
They were interesting as art, but not very concerned with
presenting genuine characters or telling a meaningful story.
Music and food: I like a wide variety of both. I am mostly
vegetarian but
not perfectly strict about it.
The six things I could never do without
Could never do without?
air, water, food, shelter, hope
Would not want to do without?
friends,
snuggling, net access, good health, a
sense of humor, a sense of purpose
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I find relationships very rewarding and a lot of fun. They also
take some real effort by everyone involved to make sure they keep
going well. Communication about difficult issues doesn't ever get
easy, but you have to do it anyway.
A completely different thing I think about: some day I would like
to be involved in making a really cool computer program - maybe
something involving a big peer-to-peer network. There are so many
things to do, I can't imagine getting bored.
On a typical Friday night I am
Contra dancing is
typical for Fridays. Saturdays: watching something with friends at
someone's house (a movie, anime, Coupling, the new Doctor Who, The
Daily Show), going out to dinner, just being lazy at home, going to
see friends perform, occasionally going to a sci-fi convention or
outdoor festival.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
Hmm, well, how private would it be if I admit it here? If you want
to know anything, feel free to ask.
Oh, wait, here's one: I sometimes play
Dance Dance Revolution at
home. It is a bit silly, but it is fun and good exercise for the
times of year when it is too hot or cold or dark or rainy for
biking. It can also
be a good social game to invite friends to play or even to have as
a party theme.
You should message me if
you are interested in saying hello for whatever reason
