I am introverted, hedonistic, and thoughtful.
My Self-Summary
Hiya. My husband
Knifie_Sp00nie and I are
poly, but we're homebodies;
we'd rather entertain a couple of friends at our place than go to a
social event with umpteen zillion people where you can't hear
yourself think. It's not because I don't like people, I just prefer
more intimate, undiluted interaction. I'd much rather hang out at a
park than a bar. I'm one of those optimists you hear about- but am
never chirpy about it. Heaven forbid. One of the many reasons I
exist (I assume) is to show that smart is not synonymous with
cynical. However, this doesn't mean you can't be as moody and
sarcastic as you want to be- I seem to get along with your kind
rather well. Balance in all things, and all that rot.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm an introverted nerdly lass. I read, I watch cartoons, I play
Rock Band, I
sing, I look at the sky. I work part-time at an abuse hotline and
part-time from home. I have cats and fish (freshwater) and a house
in the 'burbs with oak trees in the front yard, though I feel a
little out-of-place in Suburbia sometimes. I have a
bass guitar which I am
finally just learning how to play. I have 2 of the 'uncool vehicle
trifecta' covered- a
minivan and a
scooter- and am quite fond of both. The
scooter is a 400cc one; it gets up to highway speeds, and I have
taken road trips on it. I can ride a motorcycle, I just happen to
prefer scooters. Now I only need to get a canoe to finish it up so
the kayakers can laugh at me.
I’m really good at
...communicating, pointing out constellations, figuring out other
peoples' relationship problems (and sometimes even my own),
accepting things as they are as opposed to how I want to them to
be, singing, untangling knots, discussing spirituality or sussing
out ethical dilemmas (I know the two are not necessarily related),
playing bass guitar badly, following my heart, enjoying myself. I
was raised by therapists so my emotions get a stage upon which to
speak, but for all that I think I'm a relatively laid-back,
low-maintenance person. You'd have to ask folks close to me to find
out if I'm deluding myself.
If you're into the Myers-Briggs test, I score right in the middle
on the last scale, which is the planner-spontaneous score. I'm a
switch on that scale- and lean a little to the spontaneous side in
fact. But somehow I often end up being the planner. I have a gift
for organization, but no great love for it, and like to relax and
let someone else call the shots sometimes. But alas, I hang out
with a lot of artistic types and so end up being 'the reliable
one'. Ah, well.
The first things people usually notice about me
...the big hair. That gets old. It's curly and there's a lot of of
it, and I never know what to do with it. I got teased about it when
I was a kid, and am finding out now that people dig it, so that's a
nice change.
I'm not skinny. Being a lazy hedonist has it's price, but I'm
working at it- and my doctor says my cholesterol is so low it's
'un-American'; hey, we all get to be proud of something. I'm
generally caught wearing jeans and t-shirts, though I can get
nicely tarted-up if the occasion warrants it. In Austin, the
occasion rarely warrants it, which is one of the things I love
about this town- I really prefer casual to formal as a rule.
Overall, I tend to go unnoticed. I don't mean this in a whiny "why
don't you people recognize my obvious greatness?" sort of way; I'm
the type of person who's a little uncomfortable in the spotlight.
Generally I'm expressing my 'thoughtful silence' persona- I don't
usually talk unless I have something to say- if you're very
extraverted this might come across like I'm making you work to get
to know me... I suppose there's some truth to that, but it's not my
intent. And this is why I don't prefer a crowded scene; I fade into
the background easily. That all being said, if we hit a topic I
love (or you get me the right kind of intoxicated in the right
setting) you can't get me to shut up. I also have discovered
through the wonders of modern photography that when I really get
going, I talk with my hands more than I ever realized.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books- Sunwaifs by Sydney Van Scyoc, anything by P.C. Hodgell or
Steven Brust; America by Jon Stewart. The Wrinkle in Time books.
I'll admit that I read mainly to escape and entertain my brain
these days (so a fair amount of trashy sf/fantasy- Lackey and
Hamilton and the like), though I'm a sucker for an astronomy
article with lots of pretty Hubble pictures. I guess that's not a
book, but neither is Wikipedia, which provides hours of weird
reading entertainment.
Daniel Quinn's good for when I'm in
a serious mood. So's
Meister Eckhart.
Movies-
Raising Arizona, Super Troopers,
Galaxy Quest,
The Big Lebowski, The
Hudsucker Proxy, Jacob's Ladder,
Altered States, American
Beauty, Office Space, Serenity, Monty Python and Studio Ghibli
anything. Sci-fi, stoner movies, and werewolf movies (even, nay
especially, the really bad ones) grab my attention.
Music- I like a lot of different kinds of music (really, everyone
says this); my mp3 collection has everything from Nine Inch Nails
to Paul Simon to Shpongle to The Smiths to Stevie Ray Vaughn to
Vivaldi. I don't like most country or rap though nerdcore is
acceptable. I was a band geek back in the day (French horn) so I
have an appreciation for classical (and dislike for Sousa), though
mainly I'm a rock and roll girl. I like songs I can sing along with
best of all. Lately my favorite has been
Jeff Buckley- the man is a god. My
collection has breadth but not much depth; there's not a lot there
that you haven't heard of. I tend to discover obscure music through
my friends however and quite enjoy being introduced to artists I've
never heard of by people who love them.
Food- garlic, mushrooms, artichokes, chocolate... I don't eat
seafood but every seafood place usually has a chicken dish, so it's
all good. This makes me the only person on OKCupid (except for the
vegetarians) who doesn't like sushi. Here, you can have mine. I
love all vegetables except celery. In fact, I would probably be a
vegetarian but I love bacon too much. You can tame the white
supremacist power structure with cheese. I have a weird aversion to
eggs that are identifiable as eggs, but I don't mind them being in
things where you can't tell they're eggs- such as cake. Mmm,
cake.
There's no TV section, but if there were
Futurama would be at the top of that
list. If you understand my username, you get bonus points. I also
will watch any
Good
Eats episode, even if it's about a food I can't stand. I just
look away when he's deconstructing the squid. Oh, and Cosmos.
Billions!
Carl
Sagan is one of the many people I have a crush on. Like many
folks I watch the Daily Show (which I've seen live!) and the
Colbert Report somewhat regularly- we ditched cable but you can
stream just about anything.
The six things I could never do without
Love- everything from silly crushes to compassion for all sentient
beings. Hell, most of the non-sentient ones too; why
discriminate?
Touch- I don't touch unless I'm sure it's welcomed, but if it is I
can get pretty handsy. I mean that in an innocent way. Maybe.
Music- listening to it, and making it. I don't write songs, but I
love to sing and am getting better at playing bass. There's always
a song in my head- go on, ask me which one.
Clear skies- sunlight, moonlight, and starlight feed me.
Passion- this probably goes along with love. But getting totally
wound up about something and into it- fun stuff. The Buddhists have
said desire leads to suffering, but I think it's attachment to
results, that is to say expectations, that is really the culprit.
Desire and passion are one of the great things about being
alive!
Trees- they block the view of the sky, but they do it in a most
delightful way. There's nothing like chilling under the
stained-glass effect of a million bright green leaves on a sunny
day.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
...sex, my relationships, spirituality (I'm a pagan; it bears
mentioning that while I'm whole-hog into the witchy thing, I don't
mind if you're any religion or no religion, so long as you don't
feel the need to convert me or sneer at me), food, the weather,
politics (I'm pretty liberal), sex, and music- always music.
On a typical Friday night I am
...grabbing dinner with some friends, then hanging out at home,
unwinding from the work week and watching the Daily Show or
Battlestar Galactica (we're Netflixing the series now that it's
over). Sometimes I feel a desire to be a little more social though.
On occasion I play
D&D (4th ed.) with friends, or
lately
Rock
Band, seeing if I can master the vocal stylings of groups
ranging from Metallica to the Dixie Chicks.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I don't shave my legs. I could say it's some sort of feminist
statement, but mostly it's just laziness combined with an acute
awareness of my poor dexterity.
Also, I like John Mayer. I do not care who he's humping (I flipped
through a gossip magazine that mentioned him while I was getting a
haircut; man, that stuff rots your brain), the guy plays guitar
well. He also sings right in my vocal range, and I will belt the
tunes out in the car when I'm alone (I'm oddly shy about singing in
front of other people).
You should message me if
...you're curious about me or feel inspired to. You love Jeff
Buckley. You saw that I checked you out and wonder why. I don't do
that star rating thing, so if you are hoping to get my attention,
just shoot me an email.
