My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Note Aug 11 2014: For liberal interpretations of the word "soon".

Note Feb 11 2014: Wow, this is nearly a year out of date. Sorry! Will update soon. It's still mostly accurate, just a little dated.

A dreamer, a gamer, a baker, an adventurer, a techie, an aspiring scientist. Trying to focus on the bright side of things, and having some dorky fun. Life is a story, and I tend to get invested in the characters.

I am pretty unassuming and chill, though I have the capacity to be acerbic or blunt. I enjoy video games, reading about how science affects our worldviews, and learning. When it comes to understanding the world, I put my faith in evolution and empiricism.

I appreciate it when people are nerdy about something(s) in life, where nerdy is defined, by the great John Green, as the capacity to be "unironically enthusiastic about stuff". I also appreciate: laid-back, but not lazy; complex, but not convoluted; adaptive and loyal.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I recently liberated myself from the shackles of dreary office work and am now mentally preparing myself to plunge into a grad program in the sciences this fall. This summer will either be filled with earnest development of hobbies or traveling, in a desperate attempt to perform some preemptive sanity management before the semester begins.

So, basically, I have a lot of free time. Let's explore.

Trying to get back into swimming on a regular basis, too.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Consistently being sleep-deprived and never letting that get in my way.

Coming up with relatively clever hacks to interesting little problems in my life. Through the power of Google and using whatever is at hand and around me.

I like to think that I'm good at learning.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Sometimes, they have to look up at the tree I'm in.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Sweets, bread, and coffee. Basically, coffeeshops are heaven. I spend a lot of time mad-science cooking. Quiches, tea, fried rice, dumplings, lasagna... I could go on. And on. And on. Baking bread is becoming a big deal for me.

I read topical non-fiction, science fiction, and textbooks. Anything with a good story arc and strong characters, or where I'll learn something cool. This also applies to movies. So, fun, or thinky, or both. Some particularly important ones: Star Wars (only the real trilogy), I Heart Huckabees, Ender's Game, Snow Crash, Fun Home, Y: The Last Man, Scott Pilgrim, Omnivore's Dilemma. Or anything with tons of science pictures (graphs count).

Games, because they're also a legitimate medium of art: Portal, Bastion, Final Fantasy, Persona, a bunch of others. Earthbound. Borderlands 2 is depriving me of sleep lately.

I really miss theatre, and I'm fervently thinking of ways to make it part of my life again. As far as music goes, a lot of game music, orchestral and electronic pop stuff, but I'll listen to everything. Anamanaguchi, Yoko Shimomura, El Ten Eleven, and a bunch of others.

I stay up to date with the world by watching Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. That and Google News.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Balance (both physical and conceptual).
A kitchen with an oven.
My trusty bike.
Occasional irreverence.
Internet.
Things are pretty tough without my glasses, too.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Not to pursue simply happiness, but what is important to me.

Plants. Science is cool. How science helps people. And how it doesn't.

My health and the things that affect it.

How to get into parkour or gymnastics or some other movement-based physical discipline in a big way. How to navigate life without all the structured hang-ups that society imposes.

How the world works. Both naturally and not. It's fascinating.

And politics. Lately, current events, our country's constant political drama, and everything it can and will affect weigh on my mind. I guess the idea of "civic duty" is stronger than my teenage self thought it would be.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
exploring new places, seeing friends, watching movies, and/or playing video/card/board games.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
is really private

you want a buddy for baking, gaming, or exploring, or more. I like chatting. It's a lot more interesting than profiles, honestly.

Definitely if the acronym "DFTBA" means anything to you.
