My Self-Summary

Until I come up with something better, I'll let wittier folks do the talking for me.

"Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up."
-James Baldwin

"I built a machine to hear the thoughts of ducks, a haunting chorus of 'Now we will rise up; now we will kill them a -- WAIT! IS THAT POPCORN??'"
-A Softer World

"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."
-Buddha

"There are too many people willing to die for war, and too few willing to die for peace."
-Tom Fox

"We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing."
- Oliver Wendell Holmes

"I don't need none of yo' tired-ass country club, ya freak BITCH!"
- Franklin Delano Bluth

What I’m doing with my life

I just graduated from college with a B.A. in psychology and I'm working on getting into a decent (read: any) clinical psychology grad school program that will have me (and pay for me). I'm going to be taking a year or two off to explore, work on my resume, and just enjoy life. I'm applying to teach for america, looking for lab positions, and thinking about traveling overseas for a while. I moved to a queer group house in petworth (aka the hot tub house) in the summer, so I'm still working on exploring the DC area and meeting engaging DC queers, which is fun times. Pretty much, I'm down for anything and I my future looks like a bit of a blur right now. So it goes.

I’m really good at

I like to think that I'm pretty good at holding an intelligent conversation and holding my own in a passionate debate. I'm a pretty good listener, and probably prefer listening to speaking. I'm also good at remembering random trivia that doesn't seem to serve any purpose other than to clog my brain and prevent me from remembering stuff that's actually useful (having listened to every This American Life episode doesn't seem to have helped matters much). And I definitely have a knack for wasting time.

The first things people usually notice about me

My hair? It's all natural and curly and people seem to enjoy touching it... a lot. I'm also a really big smiler. I can't help it, smiling's my favorite.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Favorite Music (According to Last FM): 1. Sufjan Stevens 2. Broken Social Scene 3. Brazilian Girls 4. The Magnetic Fields 5. Cat Power 6. Mirah 7. Andrew Bird 8. Of Montreal 9. Ani DiFranco 10. Devendra Banhart and Elliott Smith (tied)

I've also been listening to a lot of Rae Spoon and Bon Iver. But really, I'll listen to just about anything at least once.

Go here to see what I'm listening to right now

Favorite TV Shows: Arrested Development, The Daily Show with John Stewart, The L Word, America's Next Top Model (shut up, it's a guilty pleasure), The Office, Grey's Anatomy, anything on Discovery Health Channel (Jerry Springer for the medically-inclined), House, and Project Runway. However, I'm watching a lot less TV these days, since it seems like there's too much interesting stuff going on in my life to justify spending time on TV.

Favorite Movies: The Incredible True Story of Two Girls in Love, Be Kind Rewind, You Me and Everyone We Know, Run Lola Run, Secretary, Amelie, Ed Wood, Cry Baby, Lost in Translation, Requiem for a Dream, Clockwork Orange, Rushmore, Empire Records, Pulp Fiction, Memento, Happiness, Blazing Saddles, The Breakfast Club, Se7en, 8 1/2, City of God, Y Tu Mama Tambien

Favorite Books/Authors: Roald Dahl, On The Road, Kurt Vonnegut, Clockwork Orange, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Flowers for Algernon, Giovanni's Room, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Invisble Man, James Baldwin, F. Scott Fitzgerald, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Amy Hemple, the list continues to grow and grow

Favorite Food: I love both the old favorites and exploring new flavors. I love anything with lots of spice (indian, ethopian, etc). If I could only eat one sort of food for the rest of my life, it would have to be sushi. I used to work as a product demonstrator at an organic market, so I got the chance to try new things that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. My roommates and I love cooking together and recently made a vegan feast, complete with a pumpkin pie made from scratch (using a pumpkin we picked from a pumpkin patch!). I also think that avocado makes just about anything taste better.

The six things I could never do without

Good conversation, well-worn favorite books, an endless supply of music, mental stimulation, great friends, and a comfortable bed

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Gender, sexuality, queerness, cute baby animals, grad school applications, how I can make a difference in children's lives, nothing and everything all at the same time

On a typical Friday night I am

Watching movies and drinking beer at home, going to a show to dance like crazy, or going out to/making dinner with friends/roommates.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm a study in contrasts. While I love people, and love making new friends, I'm an introvert at heart.

You should message me if

You've got basic mastery of the english language, think we would get along, and aren't (too) creepy. Bonus points if you want to show me around DC and help me find all kinds of fun stuff to do and shows to see.
