I am smart, funny, and curious.

My Self-Summary

I'm married! Incidentally, my wife is (or was) my highest match on here... we didn't meet here, but at least we know the matching algorithm is fairly reliable.

These days, I'm doing nifty research and development for an aviation science company. When I'm not crunching numbers, I enjoy sports, books, movies, dancing, traveling, playing the piano, and a thousand-and-one other things.

I'm here to meet people to do stuff with in the real world -- join me in debating politics, singing bawdy songs over pints at a pub, cheering court-side at a Wizards game, or cheering more reservedly at the Kennedy Center.

Oh, and I have a particularly unhealthy obsession with Harry Potter. Seriously.

What I’m doing with my life

Over the years, I've studied the Fin de Siècle in Austria at the University of Vienna; Applied Physics, Math, and Computer Science in Pennsylvania; and Computer Science and Linguistics in Northern Virginia.

Now, I've got a Masters Degree in Computer Science, and I'm doing nifty research stuff. It passes the time, and pays pretty well.

I'm also now a part time professor at GMU. How about that?

Perhaps one day I will end up as a full time teacher, or maybe a writer. Something creative, that doesn't tie me to a desk from 9 to 5 every day.

I’m really good at

I'm really good at figuring stuff out. I do lots and lots of things, but I'm not "really good" at many of them. Maybe I should make a list of stuff that I'm just good enough at, that I'm not embarrassed to do them in front of other people (even if perhaps I should be)... let's see, skiing, basketball, playing the piano, singing, playing the pennywhistle, cooking generic European food, public speaking, reading, reproducing complicated (but basically useless) math/physics trivia from memory.

I really suck at remember names and faces... last winter, I was on a business trip in a state I'd never been to before, and at dinner the waiter comes up and says "hey, how've you been, I haven't seen you in AGES!" And I was like "um... I'm really sorry, but I have no idea who you are." But I was really worried, because that happens to me all the time! Fortunately, he was just screwing with me. I keep hoping this fog clears. There's actually a technical term for this condition... but (you guessed it!) I can't remember what it is.

The first things people usually notice about me

The Euro-trance pulsing from the speakers of my yellow sports car as I careen dangerously into the parking lot. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration. I'm not usually careening dangerously...

Otherwise... it's hard to say what people notice first. I usually smile at people as I walk by, and I frequently have a spring in my step as though I'm still dancing to the music that no one else can hear.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Harry Potter! Lord of the Rings (but I hated Peter Jackson's movies for ruining all the great themes of the books). Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series, Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series, Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series.

I read literature too... 1984 is disturbing and has amazing foresight. Dumas's Count of Monte Cristo is an inspiring tale of conquest and redemption. I recently re-read Baroness Orczy's Scarlet Pimpernel which is an exciting story of daring young men, with nothing better to do then risk their necks to Madame Guillotine.

Movies: Howl's Moving Castle (also a great book!), Castle in the Sky (and anything by Miyazaki), Star Wars, Casablanca, French Kiss

Music: I listen to European dance music on RadioSeven.se and I have an unhealthy addiction to Nena's 99 Luftballons. I'm a fan of Nightwish, Sugarcult, Guns n' Roses, Smile.DK, old George Strait (and other 70s and 80s Country music), the BeeGees. I also love classical music, such as the opera Carmen by Bizet. Hmmm, none of those are in the same genre are they?

Foods: Pizza, Lasagna, anything Pork, CHOCOLATE!!

The six things I could never do without

Books (mountains and piles of books!!)

Indoor Plumbing (be back later, it's time for a nice, long, hot shower)

Fabric Softener (mmmm soft laundry)

My Piano (I'm not very good, but I'm enjoying myself)

TiVo (because I refuse to work my schedule around the Networks)

And Books. Yes, Books.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Surprisingly, the things I could never do without.

On a typical Friday night I am

On a typical Friday night, I'm restlessly pacing my living room, because all of my friends are too exhausted from the work week to go out. Shame on them!

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

My name is Brian. That's not very private is it? Come to think of it, I've probably already said way too much in this profile thingie. Especially considering that most people are going to read all of this and start clicking the back button just as quickly as they can.

You should message me if

You should message me if you aren't totally freaked about meeting someone in person, because I already spend enough time in front of this computer, and our goal here is to get out into the real world!

So, I'd like to hear from you if you want to debate/discuss the details of the NBA play-offs, Harry Potter, Tolkien, Star Wars, mythology, Christianity, politics, or basically anything intelligent, literary, or sports-related. Particularly if you want to have such a debate or discussion over a pint of beer or a glass of wine. Or even over shots of tequila, I suppose. Just not over the Internet, which doesn't go well with salt and lime.

Despite my increasing years, I tend to relate a lot better to the younger crowd than the older crowd, and my wife tells me that I should add a note saying "no fat chicks", though I think that's probably a rude thing to say.
