My self-summary
Let's see. My name's Will. I grew up in rural Vermont and spent my formative years in Burlington, VT studying writing at Champlain College.

Writing is my passion. I work as a freelance journalist, scribbling things about art and culture. Mostly music. But fiction is my first love. Science fiction, to be more specific. But softer metaphysical, psychological, character-driven stuff. I've completed two (unpublished) novels and recently started selling short stories.

I'm also a musician. I play guitar and drums and I sing. I also DJ a little and produce electronic music as well. I've been in and out of bands since high school and am constantly recording solo stuff (or trying). Music and creating are really important to my life.

As far as other stuff, I'm interested in clothes, hair, philosophy, feminism, psychology, politics, science, film, tech, video games, geek culture, and the Earth.
What I’m doing with my life
I just moved to Berkley, CA to find more job opportunities and be around more music, film, and culture. I also just love the Bay Area. My day-to-day is freelance and fiction writing: reviewing albums, pitching to magazines and blogs, submitting short stories to lit mags, and trying to finish a novel. Promoting myself endlessly. It's more work than play at the moment, but I love it. Also considering going back to school, either for film, psychology, or just more writing. I'm at a weird but exciting crossroads, I guess.
I’m really good at
Conversation and communication are really important to me -- things I try to be really good at. Understanding, exploring, learning, listening. I'm also a pretty good skier.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm an introvert so I get pegged as quiet, but I don't feel quiet. The beard gets a decent amount of attention, haha. Maybe my hair? At the moment it's kind of a shaggy fauxhawk/mohawk thing. I try to experiment with it since it's just up there hanging out anyway. I get tagged as funny consistently, which I'm definitely okay with. Passionate, earnest (maybe a little unwieldy).
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I love sci-fi and fantasy. My favorite books are His Dark Materials, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon, Naked Lunch, Ender's Game, and Blood Meridian. I usually have a couple books going. Right now it's The Last Unicorn and Consider Phlebas. I'm also a comic book reader.

For film, I love David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. My favorite movies are Blade Runner (this movie has had a scary amount of influence on my life), 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, Blue Velvet, Stalker, Solaris, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Alien, Aliens, Star Wars, Indian Jones, LOTR, Apocalypse Now, Brazil, Persona, Tree of Life, Dancer in the Dark, Scott Pilgrim, The Fountain, Kurosawa, Korean cinema. I really love everything from popcorn flicks to foreign to indie. I'm currently trying to make my way through the Criterion Collection on Hulu. I recently saw Before Midnight and Upstream Color, which both floored me. I like film a lot.

The shows I'm watching regularly are Game of Thrones, The Americans, Orphan Black, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Parenthood, New Girl, Louie, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and of course Breaking Bad and Mad Men. But my favorites are The Wire, Friday Night Lights, Twin Peaks, The West Wing, Lost, Buffy, Firefly, Arrested Development, Spaced, and Cosmos. I'm also an avid anime watcher. My favorites are Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, FLCL, and Eureka Seven.

I'm really into everything as far as music. I love dance music, metal, ambient, and on and on. Some of my favorite bands are Acid Mothers Temple, Animal Collective, The Antlers, Arcade Fire, The Avalanches, Boards of Canada, Bat For Lashes, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Bjork, Black Sabbath, Bob Dylan, Boredoms, Boris, Brian Eno, Bruce Springsteen, Burial, Camera Obscura, Can, Chromatics, Comets On Fire, Daft Punk, David Bowie, Dead Can Dance, Demdike Stare, Disclosure, Electric Wizard, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Flying Lotus, Galaxie 500, Giorgio Moroder, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hawkwind, Holy Other, The Haxan Cloak, The Knife, LCD Soundsystem, Led Zeppelin, Lightning Bolt, Lustmord, M83, Mastodon, Miles Davis, Neil Young, Neurosis, Neutral Milk Hotel, Pink Floyd, The Pixies, Radiohead, Roxy Music, Roy Orbison, Sigur Ros, Simon & Garfunkel, Sonic Youth, The Stooges, Sunn O))), T. Rex, Thee Oh Sees, This Mortal Coil, Titus Andronicus, Ty Segall, The Velvet Underground, Vitalic, Wu-Tang Clan, a lot more...
The six things I could never do without
Music, stories, love, conversation, learning, writing.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Art, music, characters, stories, emotional landscapes, metaphysics, love, empathy, understanding, feminism, philosophy, psychology, mysticism, parapsychology, religion, science, history, politics, different perspectives, other people's lives, how to be a better person, how to make the world a better place, how to make a story better, optimism as a choice, goals, dreams, the future.
On a typical Friday night I am
I like quiet evenings. I'm more of a one-on-one or small group guy, so Friday is either spent at home or out with a couple people conversing over food and drinks, catching a movie, or seeing a show. I do like to dance. I'm also pretty interested to explore SF.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have an eye condition called keratoconus.
