I am smart, passionate, and fun.

My Self-Summary

I'm a scientist who thinks about the cosmos and the meaning of life and stuff, but I am also very down to Earth. I like to learn new things. There are lots of ways to do that: books, movies, the web, traveling, and just talking with great friends. I also like to teach others what I know, which is in part why I started a blog (http://sciencesense-eyesopen.blogspot.com/)

I love to laugh. I like subtle humor as well as slapstick and even puns. That is a common theme: I enjoy both the champagnes and the coca colas of life.

I have always been fit and I aim to stay that way. One of my favorite things is to run down to the beach. I eat well most of the time, but often splurge. It is hard to imagine living without chocolate---I think you can eat it with almost anything. (Have you every tried chocolate with chipotle? That'll tingle your tongue!)

I am a very tactile person, but only after you get to know me well. I love to hold and caress and stroke. While I like sex, I much prefer making love. I see them as quite different.

I consider myself a very honorable person. I care about the world and want to make it a better place. But I also believe in "everything in moderation".

If this isn't enough info, you'll just have to wait for my autobiography. Or did you want a chapter in it? :)

What I’m doing with my life

I have a secure career in science which I enjoy. I like to run 2-3 races a year. I aspire to play the piano better. I love to travel. Although I am an agnostic, I am involved with a Unitarian Universalist fellowship on that larger search for truth and meaning. I am very tolerant of other beliefs except ones which involve intolerance.

I’m really good at

Problem solving; snuggling; kissing; running; stretching (I'm flexible for a guy). I get along with almost everyone. Life is too short to let petty differences sour things.

The first things people usually notice about me

My face; my deep voice; my cute butt; my intelligence; my irreverent sense of humor.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I have a wide range of tastes in all of these things from french fries to sushi, from Harry Potter to Shakespeare, from summer blockbuster to dark foreign film, and from Pop to Rachmaninov. The details below are "under construction".

Music:
Rock: The Beatles, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Steely Dan
Classical: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Gershwin, Rachmaninov, Segovia
Pop: KT Tunstall, Nickelback, Green Day, Chumbawamba, Was (Not Was)
R&B: Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys
Folk: Indigo Girls, Arlo Guthrie, Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Jazz: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, Manhattan Transfer
Soundtracks: Riverdance, Cats, Hair, O Brother Where Art Thou?

Reading:
I read A LOT of nonfiction: blogs, magazines, newspapers, popular science books, research articles, and reference books. My interests in these tend toward science, technology, and politics. I also listen to a lot of NPR and podcasts.

Fiction: science fiction, particularly hard sci fi (like Ringworld by Larry Niven); fantasy (Tolkien; Harry Potter (all 7 of 'em)); thrillers (like those of Dan Brown--although I hate when he gets the science wrong); mysteries; classics (like the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck); plays (I still read and reread Shakespeare; Cyrano de Bergerac by Rostand; Copenhagen by Peter Frayn). See also The Most Private Thing I am Willing to Admit Here.

Movies:
Casablanca, Groundhog Day, Beetlejuice, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Life of Brian, Duck Soup, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Star Wars, Star Trek II & IV, Spider-Man, The Dark Knight, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, James Bond Movies, Men in Black, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Matrix, Twelve Angry Men, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It's a Wonderful Life, You Can't Take it With You, The Sound of Music, Singn' in the Rain, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Across the Universe, Like Water for Chocolate, Tampopo, Gone with the Wind, The Sting, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Murder on the Orient Express, Brazil, V for Vendetta, Dr. Strangelove, Alien, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Blues Brothers, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Contact, A Beautiful Mind, Dead Poets Society

The six things I could never do without

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How to make the world a better place. How to communicate what I've learned about science to the world. See my blog:
http://sciencesense-eyesopen.blogspot.com/

On a typical Friday night I am

I love to hear live music, especially if it is a friend or friend of a friend. I like movies and plays. I love to dance.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

If you want to learn really private things about me, you'll have to get to know me first.

Here's a little one. I am addicted to the Daily Show. I must get my fix. I hate the weeks Jon Stewart takes off. It's alright, I'm not tied to the couch: I have a DVR.

OK, here is a real one. I am a little embarrassed about my fiction reading list. I'd love to say that I probe deep novels, like À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time) by Marcel Proust. I HATED what little I could get through of it. The truth is I'd much prefer a hard-pounding page-turner. Life is short and I want to be entertained.
