His journal posts
Various wondering thoughts
Jul 7, 2008
Another journal post :-)
The homepage said I should make another journal to up my score (currently 65%), so here I am again. What shall I write about today?
My first entry was hard to write, since I'm not very familiar with the "blogging" environment. Also I'm fairly paranoid about writing personal stuff on the internet. Yesterday's entry, prompted by OkCupid's hint helped me overcome my reluctance a bit.
My boss returned from China today. He bought me a PSP while he was there, and gave it to me free as a gift today! That's so awesome. I'm looking forwards to playing games on it. Also going to hack it and try out some homebrew software later this month, when a friend visits from Korea.
Other than that, work hasn't been too busy. I've been working late (until 6 or so), but mostly because I've been in the middle of something at 5 that I didn't want to stop working on. I do that a lot. Good thing that other later workers lock up, otherwise I'd probably stay until 7 if left to my own devices. I often work through lunch too, unless I'm really tired from staying up late on the net the night before. Those days I have a nap in my car in the underground parking over lunch hour.
As mentioned earlier, a friend of mine is visiting from Korea later this month. We were best friends while he was still in South Africa. About 2 years ago he left for South Korea to teach english. Since then we've kept in touch over IM and e-mail. He visits each year for about 2 weeks. Last year he brought his cute Korean girlfriend along too :-)
What shall I write about next? Video games sounds like a good subject :-)
I'm an avid video gamer. I used to play a lot of games on PC, but these days it's mostly Playstation 2. I stopped playing PC games (for the most part) after switching my home PC over to Linux. I can dual boot, but it's a pain :-) These days I like being able to use the PC to web browse, use a text editor, read manga, etc while playing games, without interrupting the game. It's a bit of a waste, since I have a very large PC game collection that I still need to work my way through. I'll finish my PS2 game collection first ;-)
I recently finished Arc The Lad: Twilight of the Spirits. I started it a few years ago, but stopped half-way through. It has it's good points, but isn't the most engaging game :D I've just started Odin Sphere. Also has it's good points, but I'm not hooked. Want to finish it, though. I've stopped half-way through too many games already :-)
My favourite game so far is Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia. It's an obscure JRPG (Japanese Roleplaying Game) title you won't find in a SA store. I happened to download and listen to it's awesome soundtrack from bluelaguna. It was love at first sight, so I ordered it on e-bay :-) I'm really looking forwards to playing Ar Tonelico 2. It was released in Japan months ago. Hopefully it will be translated into English by the end of this year. A month or so back I started learning Japanese, just in case it doesn't get translated ;-) That's how big a fan of the series I am :D. I'm also a fan of anime and manga, so improved Japanese knowledge will help with those too.
Argh, I did it again! I thought it was 1000 words instead of 1000 characters! Only realized this by the time my full-screen text editor (kwrite) had a screen-full of words. So now I'm at 3318 characters. This time there is no boring introspective stuff, so I'll leave it like this :-)
Maybe OkCupid will take the extra characters into account and not bug me about journal entries again for a while :D
David.

How are you gentlemen !!
Jul 6, 2008
The homepage said I should post something long here to get a higher
score, so here I go :-)
First, I shall introduce myself. I'm David, currently 28 years old, single, and I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I live by myself in a flat, and I work as a systems programmer for a small radio advertising company.
Life is pretty good for me at the moment. I have plenty of privacy, lots of spare time to persue hobbies. Work is good too.
Heh :-) I misread the okcupid home page. I thought it said 1000 *words* needed. I wrote about 484 words (2453 characters) of boring introspective stuff before realising this :-)
[OMG SNIP!!!]
I'll format the rest of this as a Q&A. I'll keep the answers on the short side.
Q: Why am I single?
A: I'm introverted and haven't been interested enough in socialising or dating to meet women. I feel lonely sometimes, but am also happy living by myself.
Q: Why did I sign up with an online dating site?
A: I don't socialise easily, but I'm fairly good at writing.
Q: Why OkCupid?
A: I've tried others, but they are a PITA and have many restrictions. I like OkCupid's freeness, geekish background, active maintenance, and it's overall philosophy more than any other sites I've seen so far. Also, it was recommended by other geeks on a technology news website I frequent ;-)
Q: What am I looking for?
A: I want to chat with women who share my geekish interests, or who have compatible personalities. If there is mutual attraction we'll take it slowly from there.
I'm not expecting much from this site, but I am hopeful. My plan is to get my profile up to 100%, and then see what else the site has to offer, start taking more tests, searching for compatible women's profiles, and so on.
PS: This post's headline is from Zero Wing's "All Your Base Are Belong To Us", one of my favorite geeky web phenomenon. More info here: http://allyourbase.planettribes.gamespy.com/index.shtml
