I enjoy street food, powder skiing, wood bowls and weathered objects, brown leather and burritos with a lightly grilled tortilla, the key of A minor, rainforest night hikes, outdoor markets, October weather, soft chocolate cookies, good lighting, any kind of vista, and that first, enthralling hour in a new foreign city.

I'm a freelance writer and photographer for the New York Times and various magazines.

I'm interested in characters and their passions, subcultures and side angles, good narratives. I once embedded with Marines in the Nevada mountains as they trained with Afghan role players, and visited the southernmost penguin colony, in Antarctica, where I also did a handstand at the South Pole, so I could feel the weight of the world on my shoulders (didn't work that way). I once traveled to the world's most remote island (there's Internet), and wrote about ingesting a hallucinogen in the Amazon (for which i actually got paid). A couple summers ago I attended the world's largest RV rally; it had a doggie swimsuit contest and a world record attempt for the most simultaneous high-fives. I spent the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election in Kenya, with Obama's grandmother, sister and uncles, at their home. But by claim to fame is that I invented a popular dessert sushi in Laos.

You could say that I'm just vagabonding through the course catalog of a liberal arts college.
