My self-summary
Things I have going for me: I'm tall, smart, good at conversation, funny, sensitive, and I have a million dollars. Also one of those is not true.

I recycle. I prefer cursive to block printing. I can name all 195 countries on the countries of the world sporcle.

I'm a keen observer of others and I'm fascinated by what motivates people, where people get their beliefs and opinions, and how they make their decisions.

I subscribe to a logical, scientific, rationalist worldview that I wish I could follow more often. But huge parts of life seem to me to be totally irrational, like aesthetics, love, sex, why I like spicy food, why the Rolling Stones are better than the Beatles, etc.

I like all the things that everyone likes: travelling, drinking beer, learning new things..., nature, especially monkeys, coffee, rock and roll, highbrow cinema, Indian food, laughing, the satisfaction that comes from minor accomplishments.

Actually I'm quite boring, but hanging out with me is always fun because I can squeeze something funny or interesting out of any situation.
What I’m doing with my life
I teach math at a high school in the suburbs, which is way more challenging, rewarding, and fun than I ever would have imagined. No two days are the same, and I like my school and my students, so I'll probably be there for awhile.
The first things people usually notice about me
What I would like them to notice is some combination of: interesting to talk to, nice smile, seems smart, and I am so sexually attracted to him that I cannot control myself.

In actuality it's probably some combination of: big nose, some holes in his shirt, and "man, that guy on the other side of the room is a really bad dancer".
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I recently made a list of (what I think are) the 8 greatest bands: The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, The Fall, Sonic Youth, Beat Happening, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. I do realize that it's really uncool to talk about bands that are 15-45 years old, so... sorry.

I really like the Answer Me This podcast and will cry when I finally finish listening to every single one.

TV is TV. I pretty much just watch movies, sports, and Louie.

Books that I've read in the last 9 months and loved: The Long Day Wanes, the first novel by Anthony Burgess; Revolutionary Road; The Right Stuff; a book of Checkov novelas; and Foreskin's Lament (hilarious autobiographical Philip Roth-rip off). I also read pop science and pop math books from time to time. Mostly, I'm just coasting along, slowly reading the 20th century canon that really ambitious types finish by age 24 or so. I buy a lot of used books, but don't read nearly enough relative to the pleasure that it brings me.
On a typical Friday night I am
Removing everything that doesn't look like an elephant.
