My self-summary
I like Zen a lot... and climbing.

I'm an ISTP - mechanic / optimizer personality type, so I'm usually thinking of how to fix / improve things.

An important note to get out up front, I'm not into romantic exclusivity. I'm not averse to commitment or anything like that. I'm deeply committed to the well-being of all of the people I care about. I just don't want to ask people not to act on their romantic feelings for people just because we have romantic feelings for each other and vice versa.

I'm almost always completely honest. I love truth and just can't respect those who don't. Science is the bomb diggity. (whimsy fail?)

I'm a student of human nature. I find people fascinating, especially their beliefs. Hence, my passion for psychology and philosophy. Most conversations I have end up meandering back to one or both of (often the interaction between) them.

I'm a Secular Humanist and I take Philosophy and the notion of the good life very seriously. I firmly believe that pretty much everyone wants to lead the good life, and that gives me tremendous hope.

I love to discuss / debate religious, broader philosophical, political, and social topics in a collaborative, friendly way and I do so as often as possible.

Politically I'm definitely an independent, though that label is quite dilute.

I really want to help make the world a better place. I try not to be cynical.

MacGyver and Captain Picard are my heroes. Oh, and the four horsemen... love them all (especially Sam, though).

What I’m doing with my life
I am a comics store. Well, I have a business selling comics online. If you want comics, I can probably help you out. Also, I make my own schedule completely.

I climb things; mostly rocks, but other things as well.

I'm much more interested in being a kind of person than in doing or having a list of things. Not that I don't like doing things, I do.
I’m really good at
Empathy, conversation, analysis, advising, argument, inquiry, playing music, encouragement, but mostly just listing my skills. ;)
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm 6'3". I'm skinny. I'm curious. I talk about ideas a lot. I wear a lot of black, but not in a cheezy way. Seriously, people notice the lack of cheeziness.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Nonfiction: Daniel Kahneman and other behavioral economists (if it has to do with rationality, I'm interested), Marcus Aurelius, the old-school secular existentialsts (Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus), Malcolm Gladwell, Joel Achenbach, Darwin, Michael Shermer, George H. Smith, Brian Greene, Carl Sagan

Fiction: The Dune series, The Princess Bride, The Road, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Kafka, Dostoyevski, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, A Clockwork Orange, Tom Robbins

T.V. - The Newsroom, Homeland, Six Feet Under, The West Wing, Deadwood, Firefly, Dollhouse, STTNG, BSG, True Blood, Lie to Me, House, The Prisoner ('67), MacGyver, In Treatment, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, House of Cards, The Walking Dead, True detective, GOT

Movies - V for Vendetta, I (<3) Huckabee's, Mindwalk, The Princess Bride, Hurlyburly, Good Will Hunting, Primer, Interstellar, Memento

Music - Alt-J, Beirut, Nick Drake, Alexi Murdoch (basically a reincarnation of Nick), The Beatles, Bela Fleck, Zoe Keating, The Dresden Dolls, Florence and the Machine, Feist, The Low Anthem, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jeff Buckley, The National, Arcade Fire, Ramona Falls, MGMT, Bach, Beethoven, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Regina Spektor, Radiohead, Phil Keaggy, Mumford and Sons, The Cinematic Orchestra, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Brian Eno, Mark Knopfler, Paul Simon, Floyd, Zeppelin... could keep listing for quite a while.
The six things I could never do without
I've adopted a stoic outlook, so I only really need four things, and that's to be happy, I could do without any of them and survive.

stimulating conversation
a good guitar
Radiolab
a sense of purpose
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The overlap between Psychology and Philosophy

How to reduce the amount and intensity of religion in the world

Societal reform generally

the people in my life

music

the future (globalization, nanotech, biomedical stuff, A.I. / singularity)

how to thrive in a post-apocalyptic scenario
On a typical Friday night I am
Hanging out with friends, playing games, drinking, playing / listening to music, lots and lots of talking.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Become a friend and find out.
You should message me if
you like dialogue films.
you despise televangelists.
you're annoyed by conformity.
you think things can be made better.
