Testing With Things I Hate

Sep 11, 2009

Testing out the journal, but I thought I'd mention some of the things that annoy me on profiles:

"I'm not like other people"

Unless you have an identical twin, of course you're not like other people.  You have your very own genes, almost a whole tenth of a percent different from the billions of people who share many of your interests and physical characteristics.

"I'm not your average boy/girl"

Probably not.  But I bet you fall within the standard deviation.

"I probably won't message you/I'm not in to online dating"

Then why are you here?  And don't tell me it's for the tests, because you didn't have to fill out your profile to take them. Or was that just to make our actual users self-conscious?  To conceal your own private desperation?

Don't do things half-assed.  Jesus.

"I have an IQ of xxx"

Awesome.  You have five minutes to list, in reverse alphabetical order, all known life-supporting planets on which people care.

"Most people don't understand me."

We should instantly delete anyone who types this sentence or something like it, because it means the person is still in high school, and lying about their age.

---

That should do it for now.  I must say that after the tens of thousands of profiles I've seen over the last couple of years at this job, I'm happier with the human race than you might think. This might just be because I'm not a 20-something girl and I don't get accosted with messages inviting me to get raped.

What really gets me is "I'm not sure why I'm on here," or some variation of that.

For some reason people really get bent over staff robot telling them to get to XX% they need to write more in their profile... upload a photo... post a journal... add more to thei profile... message someone... use quiver.. write in the forum....

I suggest a button on those prompts for people to override and tell staff robot to go upgrade someone else's profile. (leave the notices in a TINY TINY little unobnoxious color button up in the corner or something with a tooltip hover sized like one side of the IM box that says something about tips for completing your profile....but it's minimized with a checkbox setting stored in your account instead of expanding out into the box things are suggested in.

What does this even mean? That you'll sit casually drinking your double soy capp while a bear mauls me on the sidewalk?
