At every stage our life we have an inkling about where we can be happy to hitch our wagon to a star and choose our destiny.

As a kid of 5 years old he loves to get involve into arts and craft activities collecting used boxes, plastic bottles, drawing and creating miniatures, designs, rocket ships and robots made of plastic bottles, something out of garbage and let his hands and imaginations go making a lot of mess in every corner of the house driving his mom crazy and frantic everyday. Putting together lego blocks at an early age of 3, has a big bearing in his art skills. Archie is a playful, insighhtful and curious kid.

In 2004 at age 23, Archie became a theater artist of Marikina. He used his brilliant ideas and designs in making props, used rubber, from rubber slippers and rubber shoes to rubber mat, create and mold anything that pops his mind like robots to anime, knights and etc. that can reach up to 10 feet tall, things like key chains boxes with designs statue of any size. A lot of people calls him a rubber man or "The Transformer." Meaning he can transform garbage into something useful.

In 2006 he formally learned how to use rubber arts and pushed himself to be trained and explored more to nurture his passion and will stop at nothing to perfect it. In the same year the Hataw Hanap Hero of ABS CBN channel 2, launched a competition called Cosplay. He created a costume in spired by the Lord of the Rings which made it unique than the rest. It was the first competition that he joined and he garnered the "First Prize" Best in Craft. Thereafer he won more awards. That very day marked the drastic change in his fate ever.

In 2007 he sought the help of City Government of Marikina City and they supported him the tools and more rubber for Archie to create more of his rubber crafts. The spins seems to be working at his advantage when the City government of Marikina named their 2007 Christmas Festival into "Transformers". They gave Archie the task to create more rubber robots to give attractions and entertainmant to all Marikenos and tourist especially.

Marikina City made a big boost for Archie's unique creation, making him the Marikina Rubber Artist that was the first time that he appeared over in diiferent television shows interview like Unang Hirit. Since then, Archie guested in Unang Hirit several times, Umagang Kay Ganda, Reuters, where he was featured in some show outside of the country, Tribe at Nat 25, Sa Pulso QTV11, Kiddie Kuek, TV Patrol,24 Oras where he was featured as the 2008 World Cyber games champion, Shop Talk, Mel and Joey, Padayan na Aksyon, Tacloban local news and more shows. He was featured in some radio talk show and magazines, Manila Bulletin, Manila Times, Philippine Star, The Tacloban local news interviewed him at Jam 88.3 Uno por dos, Radyo ng Bayan over 7.39 khz and a lot more.

In December 2009, Archie was invited to Tacloban to judge at the Sangyaw Festival where then, he designed and created their 50 feet Christmas rubber tree. It was one of Archie's biggest project as of yet. Everywhere Archie goes, he feels very much fulfilled keeping a group of people amazed and entertained, the toddler's utmost.

Archie's confidence flows in his skills and competencies taking the plunge believing and embracing the thrill of doing the art and skills that he loves to do best.

For the people willing enough to believe and assists him, in his talents he hopes with optimism that his arts and talents will take him to different places around the globe for somehow, somewhere in the Lord's time, his long wooed dream to be one of the National Artists will be a reality. For sure an ultimate break is at bay!!

RUBBER MAN
Mark David Cerezo hopes to reclaim Marikina's old glory through his art

The City of Marikina once holds the distinction of being the "Shoe Capital of the Philippines". But after experiencing a serious decline, the city's shoe industry is now but a faint reflection of its former self.

It is with this thing in mind that 26-years old artist Mark David Cerezo endeavors to use his creations to bring back Marikina's old glory. Cerezo is a sculptor that creates huge mascots made of scrap rubber from Marikina's shoe factories.

Marikina's "RUBBER MAN"

Cerezo became known among Marikina folks as "The RUBBER MAN" after he transformed pieces of colorful scrap rubbers into a magnificient 6-feet tall mascot Optimus Prime, the main chracter from the Transformers franchise.
Besides Optimus Prime, Cerezo has already created more than a50 robot mascots most of which won major prizes in cosplay competitions. Cosplay, which literally means "Costume play" is a kind of performance art with participants donning costumes to represent a character or concept.

Cerezo's work were so good that it came to a point that cosplay competitions won't accept his entries anymore, "They say that i should just participate as one of the judges," he told the Manila Times.

Cerezo considers "Morgul Lord" as his most memorable piece of work. It his first creation using rubber scraps as art materials and is responsible for igniting his passion for rubber art, "I never thought that people would like my first work so much. After that, I knew what am I good at," he says.

Besides his loving and supportive family to children were primarily Cerezo's inspiration for his works, "kids dream of coming face-to-face with the robots they see on comic books and TV - I want to make those dreams come true," he relates.

A creative childhood

Creating art out of found objects is something that Cerezo grew up with. With hiss innate interest in three-dimensional art and robots, he used to make robot figures out of discarded cartons and colorful papers as a young boy. He recalled being scolded by his parents because of his messy hobby.

Cerezo also reveals that his heart is so much attached with his creations, "It's easy for me to create an artwork when i'm sad. My mood has to be right when I do my work. And for me, it's best to work during midnight till dawn," he says.

For Cerezo's art, the challenge doesn't stop after a particular piece was done, "I wear my robot costumes myself. And i don those costumes with character and conviction," he explains. In one church gathering where he was invited to present his works, Cerezo even trained some people not only how to wear his robot costumes but also how act like real robots. Being a former thater actor and director, he enjoys doing such things,"It's important to behave like your costume. No matter how colorful your costume is, if you don't carry it well then it would not serve its full purpose," he stresses.

City government's recognition

Cerezo's popularity as an artist took off after receiving an official recognition from the fity government of Marikina. With the endorsement of former Mayor Marides Fernando, he became the official "Cultural Artist" of the city. With the title came projects funded by the local government. Cerezo's official project was marikina's Christmas festival with Transformers as the theme. It featured Optimus Prime and other famous robots. "I didn't expect that our beloved mayor would notice my craft. And she even recognized it as one of marikina's bests, providing funds for its promotions," Cerezo relates, adding, "My idea was to promote Marikina as a progressively transforming city symbolized through the Transformers robots that i made."

Cerezo hopes to continue in his mission despite the change of leadership in the city government. He hopes that the new administration will continue to support his craft and mission of promoting the creativity of the Marikeños, "I hope I would be allowed to forbesides being a rubber artist and a theatained," Cerezo narrates.

Income from rubber art

Cerezo taught his craft to tacloban folks, who in turn made it into a source of livelihood, "It was actually enexpected. I just taught them how to make rubber parils (lanterns) because i need their help in accomplishing my three-month project commissioned by the local government of Tacloban. But I never expected that the skill would eventually become a source of livelihood for them," he says.

Besides his big works, Cerezo also sells small items that he made during shows and exhibitions. He fashions personalized key chains on the spot and sells them for P65 each. He says that other people can easily learn to make this product that sells well, "I can't belive that I am now being sent to places to teach my craft. I am truly indebted to Marikina, particularly to Mayor fernando and Mayor Del who supported my career as a rubber artist," Cerezo relates.

Getting noticed

To Become a National Artist is Cerezo's grand dream, "I think all young artists wants to become National Artists someday. That's the biggest recognition i could ever get," he says. Cerezo revelaed that he has jsut signed and filed an application form for the national Artist title.

Cerezo is continously attracting attention from media organizations and even celebrities. He was already featured in TV shows like, Umagang Kay ganda, Unang Hirit, Kiddie Kwela, Tropang Potchi, NET 25 Tribe, 700 Club Asia, ANC Shop talk and many more. Even the people's Champ Manny Pacquiao noticed Cerezo's creations. He presented one of his robot creations during the seventh birthday of Pacquiao's eldest son, "I thought it was a prank call. But it was really Manny Pacquiao who talked to me," Cerezo recalls.

The ultimate party man Tim Yap also discovered Cerezo's works, Yap have sought Cerezo's advice for his stylish clothing. The young sculptor remembers being surprised when Yap visited his house to ask him to create a customized robot costumes. In all his accomplishments, Marikina's foremost rubber artist remains humble and thankful, "I never expected that i would go this far," he says, concluding, "That's why I always thank God."
