"his friendly and boisterous personality. And is a cutie to boot."
I promise I didn't write that!
vaunted heroes of the middle class: Cormac McCarthy (not obscure, but solid writing if a bit gruesome), Henry Miller (hey, he tells it like it Irish is, 'specially for all that German blood), countless semi-nameless historians, Salinger, His Clanciness, Neutral Milk Hotel, Great Thunder, Beach House, the XX, the Cohen Bros. canon, Wes Anderson's work, Herzog, Greneway, Sergio Leone, ... and I once saw Point Break live on stage and it was priceless...
daunting geniuses of the lower class: Buddy Rich (no, he's really does belong here, folks), Mississippi John Hurt, Van Morrission, Nas, Emmy Lou Harris, bluegrass and cajun musicians aplenty, Mark Twain,
other: Bach (bbg concerto especially... makes it seem like slowly sinking into a foggy peat bog would be just fine, actually) Mozart (Requiem and cello suite, especially), Beethoven (the raw power mixed with elation is very nice), Chopin (refined, cartesian, like a horse on dressage), Ton, Steine Scherben, Os Mutantes, Rilke, Leopold, Muir, American frontier -based children's stories translated into French, much russian constructivist 60s cinema, guerria docu work aplenty... straight documentaries aplenty...yadda, yadda, yadda.
I'm probably more likely to respond to your list than you mine, and I'm simply not going to put a bunch of obscure stuff on here to seem fancy. Media are great, but people are greater.
